Ex-Urbana HS Football Player Kyle Clevenger Dies After Being Struck at 80 mph by Train While Trying to Cross Dropped Crossing Arms

Kyle Clevenger, a beloved Urbana resident and former football and basektball player, tragically passed away in a train accident.

Kyle Clevenger, a multi-sport athlete from Urbana High School in Illinois, stood out on both the football field and basketball court during his high school career from 2007 to 2010.

Standing 6’4″ and weighing 180 lbs, Clevenger played varsity football and basketball for the Urbana Tigers, wearing jersey #34 on the hardwood.

In the 2009 football season, he recorded 161 passing yards and 60 rushing yards over seven games, ranking 152nd in Illinois and 9th in the Big Twelve Conference for passing yards.

Kyle Clevenger Died After A Collision Between a Car And a Train In Champaign County

As per the reports, former football and basketball player at Urbana High School, Kyle Clevenger, died on Sunday, July 27, 2025, after a car collided with a train in Champaign County.

Champaign County Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said that the accident took place on Leverett Road, just before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Preliminary information indicated that Kyle was driving eastbound, moved around activated crossing gates, and was hit by an Amtrak train driving northbound. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire.

However, there were no injuries reported among the train passengers or crew members. The public was asked to avoid the area as the investigation continues.

The Thomasboro Fire Department said drivers were asked to avoid the area of 1350 E. and Leverett Rd. The road was closed to motorists around 7:40 p.m. Sunday.

Ashley Brown took to her official Facebook handle and mourned the loss of Kyle. She wrote,

KYLE CLEVENGER this is the picture I seen yesterday and said damn that love and peace bbq really had a nice turn out even had my white boy Kyle there, next event I’m there! I know forsure your URBANA family is extremely hurt behind this! Hate that this is the end for you but WE will miss you and NEVER forget you🤞🏾🕊️

Rick D. Williams, a former ministry development associate at C-U at Home, took to his social media and offered his heartfelt condolences by stating,

I heard the news today. Although I don’t think I met Kyle, the impact on your family is impossible to fathom. Prayers for God’s blessings and comfort in this difficult time.

Other close ones and relatives have also sent their prayers to Kyle’s family to stay strong in this heartbreaking moment.

Kyle Cleveneger Is Survived By His Parents And Three Siblings

Kyle Clevenger was born to his father, Wayne, and his mother, Karen Clevenger.

As per Karen’s Facebook handle, she graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She has been serving at DeWitt County CenCom and the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office.

On the other hand, Kyle’s father, Wayne, studied at the School of Ministry at NNU and graduated in 2010. He worked at the International Church of the Nazarene.

Recently, on June 3, 2025, Wayne took to his Facebook and wished Karen a happy 26th marriage anniversary. He wrote,

Twenty-six years ago, you sang to me and we rode off in Arrow 45. We have made the promise to put God first and it is because of that we are here today literally. We have been through a lot of stuff, but nothing like this past weekend. I prayed God give us this day, as it was just a few days off and here we are. I know He will give us more of these too. He never fails us. I am so thankful for.. you and me. I love you Karen. Today is extra special and I’m glad we get to enjoy it together. Circles! OOOOOOOO

Karen and Wayne are currently devastated by the tragic death of their son, Kyle. Wayne took to his Facebook and wrote,

He loved what he did. He did it with all he had. He always wore my number whenever he could get it and I loved watching him play. He plays on streets of gold now. No more pain. PLH my boy. WE LOVE YOU!

Additionally, Kyle is survived by his one sister, Tory, and two brothers whose identities have been kept private.
