Jay Will explained that the Fairmont High School girls’ basketball team wasn’t trying to embarrass the other team.

In fact, they went to the zone to take the pressure off the opposing team, South Columbus.

The Fairmont High School basketball team delivered a commanding performance Friday night, securing an 87-8 home victory over South Columbus High School.

Their matchup was held on January 9, 2026. The Golden Tornadoes established control early and maintained their intensity throughout the game.

The team’s relentless defense and high-scoring offense proved too much for the visiting Stallions from Tabor City.

This decisive win strengthens Fairmont’s standing within the conference as they continue their season. The Golden Tornadoes will look to carry this momentum into their next contest.

Fairmont Coach Defends Team’s Strategy Amid “Embarrassment” Claims

Jay Will has responded to criticism that the Fairmont High School girls’ basketball team was trying to embarrass opponents during a recent game on January 9.

Some observers accused Fairmont of unsportsmanlike conduct when they switched to a zone defense against South Columbus.

Will firmly denied the accusation.

He explained that the strategic move was actually meant to ease pressure on the opposing team.

Some ppl don’t know anything about sports, not just basketball. Them girls went to a zone to take the pressure off the opposing team. Allowing them to shoot.

Will suggested the change also created valuable playing time for less-utilized players on the Fairmont High School girls’ basketball team, giving them a chance to contribute and score.

His post challenged critics to see the situation differently.

Now, let’s say your child is on the winning team and they never get in the game. This game was the time, right?? Your child gets in the game and scores 20 😂😂. Will it be an embarrassment, or your child did great?

Jay Will

Will defended the Golden Tornadoes’ hard work and competitive approach.

He requested others to stop talking down on the kids who were putting in the time working out to make it to the WNBA. It wasn’t their fault that the other team was not so good.

He concluded his post, framing the strategy as a sign of competitiveness, not being soft.

His post has sparked conversation about sports strategy, fairness, and how winning teams should manage lopsided games.

It’s so funny because when other schools do it, nobody says anything. We played a zone for 3 quarters. We held the ball for almost a minute in the 4th quarter. Everybody played; our bench played a lot. We have 9 players.
Do y’all want us to let the other team score? Let’s just be honest, people are tired of seeing us winning.
