Football Coach Bullied My Son Into a Mental Health Crisis, and Falsely Accused a Player of Theft- Marine City Parents

A win earned through fear is no win at all.

Jeremy Miles alleges that his son was subjected to repeated bullying by Marine City High School’s football coach Darren Letson.

Letson only prioritized wins and personal reputation over the health and safety of the team.

For some players on the field, the victory feels empty, and they are relieved when the final buzzer sounds, as the yelling of a coach comes to an end.

It is a reality for some high school athletes who play under a coach who believes bullying is the same as coaching. It’s not about tough love or pushing athletes to be their best, but it’s about humiliation, constant criticism, and fear.

A bullying coach screams insults instead of giving instructions and blames a single player for a team loss, or belittles athletes in front of their peers. They prioritize the win over the well-being of the young people in their care.

The “win-at-all-costs” attitude hurts feelings, shatters a student’s confidence, fuels anxiety, and steals their love for the game. It teaches a terrible lesson that success justifies treating people poorly.

Proper coaching is about building up athletes, not breaking them down. It’s about creating leaders and teaching that respect, teamwork, and effort are what truly define a victory on and off the field.

Marine City Parents Allege Football Coach Drove Son to Mental Health Crisis

A local family is speaking out against the Marine City High School football program.

Jeremy Miles alleges that head coach Darren Letson bullied his son to the point of a severe mental health crisis.

Miles took to Facebook to share his family’s experience, warning other parents about the environment under Coach Letson’s leadership.

He claims the coach prioritizes winning and his personal reputation over player safety and well-being.

According to Miles, his son endured repeated bullying from Letson, resulting in a four-month hospitalization. He states the coach never once checked on his son’s well-being during that time.

Moreover, he alleges Coach Letson falsely accused a player of theft in a separate incident.

The item was later found to be in another coach’s possession, yet no apology was given. The accused player subsequently quit the team.

To current and future parents, I sincerely hope you never have to experience what we have. Please stay vigilant and involved. Pay close attention to how the program is run and how your children are treated. If you want to understand the kind of leadership Coach Letson provides, I encourage you to revisit the first school board meeting where I spoke. His concern was solely for his reputation—not once did he acknowledge the pain his actions caused my son.

Furthermore, Miles claims the school district has ignored this pattern of behavior for years.

He is now urging the community to demand accountability and is willing to share his story publicly to ensure no other family has to endure a similar ordeal.

He supports his son alongside his wife through long nights of reading and helping him with his coursework as he struggles with the trauma he endured.

Letson has ALWAYS been this way and I graduated 15 years or so ago. Never learned a damn thing in his history class either. 🤣 This is his personality… A tough ass… That being said it does not fit well in an academic setting or without a warning label. I am very sorry about your son and I hope he continues to receive the help he needs.

The allegations highlight serious concerns about the culture within the sports program and the duty of care owed to student-athletes.
