The Heyfield Football Netball Club and the wider community are grieving after the sudden death of Ben Darby, a talented young footballer and much-loved teammate.

His passing has left a deep void not only within the club but also among family, friends, and the countless lives he touched with his warmth, kindness, and determination.

The Heyfield Football Netball Club paid tribute to Darby, describing him as a “Roo for life.

He played his junior years with the club, made his senior debut in 2022, and in 2025 became a standout in the Reserves team.

That same season, he won both the League Best and Fairest and the Club Best and Fairest, achievements that spoke volumes about his consistency and influence on the field.

Darby was not only known for his athletic ability but also for his character.

Teammates and supporters recalled his hard work, quiet determination, and the way he stood tall in big moments.

His presence, both on and off the field, set an example for younger players and strengthened the bonds within his club.

Since the announcement of his death, condolences have poured in from clubs across the region, including Cowwarr Saints FNC, Glengarry FNC, Woodside-District Wildcats, and Sale City FNC.

They expressed solidarity with Heyfield FNC, acknowledging the pain of losing a young and promising player.

Family friends and community members also shared personal memories.

Many recalled Darby’s politeness, respect, and generosity—whether it was supporting younger students at school, encouraging them in sports, or simply offering a laugh when it was needed most.

His godfather, Colin Cox, spoke of the heartbreak of losing him, while others described him as a “true gentleman” and a “beautiful soul” who always cared for those around him.

Darby’s impact went far beyond football. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend.

Stories shared by those close to him highlight how he supported his peers, looked after younger teammates, and created moments of joy with his easygoing nature.

His loss has left not only a sporting community in mourning but also a family grieving a young man taken far too soon.

In response to his passing, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Darby’s family with funeral and memorial costs.

The fundraiser calls on the community to honor his memory by coming together with the same compassion and generosity he always showed.

Organizers reminded supporters that every contribution—whether through donations, sharing the page, or offering prayers—helps ease the burden for his grieving loved ones.

While Ben Darby’s death has left the Heyfield community devastated, his legacy endures through the lives he touched, the teammates he inspired, and the family who loved him unconditionally.

As his club expressed, Darby will always be remembered as a Roo Boy, and his spirit will remain a part of the Heyfield Football Netball Club forever.

Rest easy, Darbs. Forever a Roo.
