Born on December 19, 1938, in Flora, Mississippi, to the late William Harrison Davis and Leona Maudie Davis, Durwood grew up with a strong connection to his home state.
He attended the Mississippi School for the Deaf, graduating with the Class of 1959.
Durwood shone as a star athlete during his time there, competing in football, basketball, and track.
His talent on the field was undeniable. He broke state records and left an outstanding mark on the school’s athletic history.
Durwood also met the love of his life, Martha Sessums, at the Mississippi School for the Deaf.
The two formed a bond that would carry them through six decades of marriage, raising a beautiful family, and facing life’s joys and challenges together.
After Graduating, Durwood Had A Successful Career In The Local Printing Industry

In 2003, he retired from Graphic Reproduction, capping off a fulfilling career that spanned several decades.
Beyond his professional life, Durwood was a man of many talents. He had a green thumb and loved tending to his garden, where he carefully cultivated flowers and vegetables.
His woodworking projects were proof of his craftsmanship, and he often spent hours in his workshop creating pieces for his home and family.
Yard work was another favorite pastime, as he beautified his surroundings.
In 1962, Durwood and Martha tied the knot in Jackson, Mississippi, beginning a 63-year journey as partners in life.
Together, they raised three children: sons Bobby Lloyd Davis and Victor Dale Davis, and daughter Marta Lynn McKnight.
Durwood’s love for his family grew to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with whom he cherished spending time.
Whether he was sharing stories, playing games, or simply being present, Durwood’s warmth and humor made every moment memorable.
Martha, his devoted wife, was by his side through it all.

For 57 years, he was a dedicated member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church in Brandon, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

An avid Mississippi State Bulldogs fan, Durwood’s enthusiasm for sports never faded.
Whether cheering from the stands or watching games at home, he brought the same energy and excitement to fandom as he did to his athletic days.
His love for sports was matched only by his passion for travel. He and Martha explored new places and made memories together over the years.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Durwood’s life at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, Mississippi, on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 12:00 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Crestview Memorial Gardens, where Durwood will rest.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The Mustard Seed, 1085 Luckney Rd., Brandon, MS.
