He attended the University of Miami from 1998 to 2001, where he had an outstanding career.

He was a key player on the Miami Hurricanes team, winning the BCS National Championship in 2001.

Reed received the consensus All-American honor twice, in 2000 and 2001. He was also named unanimous All-American in 2001.

At Miami, Reed set several records, including the most career interceptions (21) and interception return yards (389) for the Hurricanes.

The Baltimore Ravens selected him in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft, with the 24th overall pick.
