The Hawai’i Hilo community is heartbroken over the loss of Garrett Estrin, the beloved head coach of the men’s soccer team, who passed away on April 17, 2025, at age 48 in Cathedral City, California.

After a courageous two-year battle with esophageal cancer, Garrett leaves behind his devoted wife, Helen, and their two children, Caitlin and Braydin.

His life showed the importance of love, strength, and a deep passion for soccer.

He left a legacy that will continue through his family and the many people he inspired.

Garrett’s life revolved around his wife, Helen, who had been his soulmate for more than thirty years.

When Garrett was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in early 2023, Helen’s strength became even more evident.

She became his most powerful advocate, never leaving his side during treatments and hospital stays.

On social media, Helen shared glimpses of their journey, moments of laughter, quiet strength, and love that defined their bond. “She was his warrior,” a close friend said. “Helen gave Garrett the courage to keep fighting.
