Phil Roberto, a beloved former NHL and WHA player, Stanley Cup champion, and coach, passed away at 76 on April 30, 2025, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.

At the heart of his life was his devoted wife of 51 years, Mary Roberto, who stood by his side through every triumph and challenge.

This is the story of Mary Roberto, the woman who was Phil’s rock, and the love that defined their extraordinary journey together.

Mary and Phil Roberto’s love story began in the early 1970s, and they married on September 1, 1973.

From that day forward, Mary was Phil’s unwavering partner, supporting him through the highs of his NHL career and life’s challenges beyond the rink.

Their 51-year marriage showed their strong bond, based on love, respect, and shared dreams.

Mary, originally from St. Louis, Missouri, grew up in a close-knit family with two brothers, Bud and Douglas Nickl, and a sister, Paula Nickl.

She attended Parkway Central High School, where she developed the strong, grounded character that would carry her through life.

Her warm personality and dedication to those she loved made her the perfect match for Phil, a driven and passionate hockey player from Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Phil Roberto Had An Impressive Hockey Career

Phil Roberto, born on January 1, 1949, played for teams like the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, Kansas City Scouts, Colorado Rockies, and Cleveland Barons in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1969 to 1978.

His crowning achievement came in 1971 when he won the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens, assisting on Jean Béliveau’s historic 500th career goal—a moment in hockey history.

Later, Phil played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) with the Birmingham Bulls before transitioning to coaching.

He led the ECHL’s Birmingham Bulls from 1993 to 1996 and later served as general manager and coach for the Columbus (Ga.)

Cottonmouths in the early 2000s.

Through every move, from city to city and league to league, Mary was there, cheering him on and keeping their family strong.

Phil Roberto’s Wife Is Not Only A Source Of Emotional Support But Also The Backbone Of Their Household

Whether it was relocating for Phil’s career or raising their two sons, Phil Roberto Jr. and Michael Roberto, Mary handled it all with grace.

She balanced her career, working as an Eileen Fisher Specialist and Ralph Lauren Specialist, with stints at Parisian and other retail roles, while always prioritizing her family.

Phil and Mary loved their family. This included their sons and, later on, their beloved grandchildren.

The couple settled in Pelham, Alabama, where they built a life filled with laughter, love, and hockey.

Mia Roberto, Phil’s granddaughter, wrote a touching tribute to capture his spirit after he passed away.

Sharing an old photo, Mia wrote,

The world started spinning a little different today as me and my family navigate the unexpected loss of my Papa Phil. I will forever cherish the memories growing up of being his baby girl. I have no doubt he is pain free and with Good Lord above. I will always remember your love for Nona, your big hugs, and your humor that had a way to make everyone laugh. I will forver be thankful that papa always showed up for his grandbabies. He raised 2 amazing boys, and im blessed to call one of them dad. I hope he’s up above back on the ice, doing what he loved.
Long Live the Legend of Papa Phil 🤍🏒

Phil’s Death Deeply Affected The Hockey Community, Leading To Many Tributes From Teams And Fans

The St. Louis Blues, where Phil played from 1971 to 1974, shared their condolences:

Kerri Mann appreciated Phil’s contributions to the sport and honored his lasting impact.

“So sad to hear of the loss of Phil Roberto. We have many fond memories of him in Columbus. With his straight face and dry wit, he could be unintentionally hilarious (or maybe it was intentional 😊). Without saying a word, his steady gaze commanded the room and you couldn’t help but respect him – even if you didn’t know all of his hockey accolades.
I am so thankful for Facebook, because we were able to keep in touch with he and Mary Roberto in recent years and nothing has tickled me more than watching that ole tough guy fret over his cats.
Sending many prayers to the Roberto Family! 💔”
