Born on November 24, 1943, he started his career as a standout player at Syracuse University in 1964.

During his 12-season career with the Detroit Pistons, Washington Bullets, and Boston Celtics, he won the Rookie of the Year in 1967 and NBA All-Star Game MVP in 1976.

Retiring in 1978, he transitioned into a successful businessman, founding Bing Steel and growing it into a multi-million-dollar enterprise.

Regarding her grandmother, Yvette Bing said,

“She is a very positive influence in my life. My grandmother is a very spiritual person and I picked up some of that from her. And she’s very kind. She’s my grandmother but she’s like the whole neighborhood’s grandmother too. That’s the type of person she is. Of course, being 100 years old, she’s not as active as she used to be, but when she was younger she was very active in the community.”

Dave Bing Had a Very Difficult Childhood

Bing was born as the second of four children in a working-class family.

His father, Hasker Bing, was a bricklayer and construction worker, while his mother, Juanita, was a homemaker who emphasized education and discipline.

At the age of 5, Bing suffered a serious injury to his left eye after being struck with a nail which left him partially blind.

Despite this, Bing developed a passion for basketball, playing on local courts and excelling at Spingarn High School. He even led his team to a city championship.

Growing up in a segregated era, he faced racial discrimination but remained determined to succeed, drawing inspiration from NBA stars like Elgin Baylor.
