Greenville, North Carolina, mourned the unexpected loss of “RJ” Lee, a cherished son, athlete, musician, and friend, on July 14, 2025.
Just one day before his 24th birthday, RJ’s unexpected death left a hole in the hearts of his family, friends, and the entire North Pitt High School community.
The exact cause of his death is not known, but his loss deeply affects Greenville and extends to Dallas, Texas, where RJ had been living.
Lee Was Known As The “Silent Giant” Among His Peers At North Pitt High School
Born on July 17, 2001, to Keimesha Staton and raised alongside his stepfather, Steve Staton, RJ grew up in Greenville, North Carolina, with siblings.
RJ was a standout multi-sport athlete at North Pitt High School, graduating with the Class of 2020.

His athletic prowess shone on the football field as the star wide receiver for the North Pitt Panthers, where his speed and grace delighted fans.
Beyond football, RJ excelled in varsity basketball and track, showing dedication and teamwork in every endeavor.
RJ’s stepfather, Steve Staton, a respected coach for North Pitt’s football and women’s basketball teams, shared a particularly close bond with him.
In a heartfelt social media post, Steve expressed his grief:
Steve’s words reveal the close connection they shared, one that developed through countless moments on and off the field.
RJ’s mother, Keimesha, also played a powerful role in North Pitt’s athletic programs, serving as a stats keeper and assistant coach for the women’s soccer team.
Together, the Staton family encouraged RJ’s love for sports and instilled in him values of resilience and humility.

After graduating from North Pitt, RJ enrolled at Elizabeth City State University, where he continued to pursue his passions.
But RJ was more than an athlete—he was a creative soul with dreams of making it big in the music and entertainment industry.
His love for music was evident to those who knew him, and he was actively working toward his goals in Dallas, Texas, at the time of his passing.
As his former history teacher and basketball coach, Marq Harrington, noted,
“This college graduate was actively pursuing his music goals. It truly seems that he has gone too soon. Now, he’s forever young. Please pray earnestly for his family.”

During this period of grief, they are facing the added challenge of managing daily responsibilities, and one way we can help ease their burden is by providing meals. If you are able to assist with delivering a meal, it would be a great comfort to them. Please click the link below to sign up!!!! Plan on a meal for 8 people. Also, be mindful that Steve is pescatarian and enjoys vegan options Additional Fruits and veggies are always welcome!!!”
She noted that meals should be planned for eight people, with consideration for Steve’s pescatarian diet and preference for vegan options.
