John Swinburne’s wife, Rosemary, supported him and his coaching career for about two decades throughout his health struggles until her passing.
John Swinburne was a legendary track and field coach at Oakridge High School. He was known for his incredible ability to train runners and build dominant teams.
Under his leadership, Oakridge won every West Michigan Conference track title from 1971 through 1985, except for one year, 1981.
Even after retiring from Oakridge, Swinburne continued coaching at various schools, assisting in track and field programs.
Tragically, John passed away on April 18, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with a complicated form of leukemia.
His health struggles began as early as 2002 when doctors discovered a tumor, and his condition worsened over the years.
Despite his illness, he remained dedicated to coaching and working with young athletes until very recently.
John Swinburne And His Wife, Rosemary, Spent Almost 56 Years Together!
John Swinburne and his beloved wife, Rosemary, were married on November 11, 1967.
The couple first met in Muskegon, Michigan, and their connection quickly blossomed into a lifelong partnership.
Together, they raised five children, who became the heart of their family.
While John was the public figure in their family, Rosemary was the quiet strength behind him.
She was not only his partner but also his biggest cheerleader throughout his coaching career and health struggles.
Born on February 24, 1949, in Muskegon, Michigan, Rosemary was born to parents Loraine (VanderMolen) and Roland Huf.
While information about her education and profession is not well-known, she dedicated much of her life to her family, rather than pursuing a formal profession.
Her greatest joy was raising her five children, and later, embracing the role of a grandmother.
She was deeply involved in community and caregiving, opening her home to relatives and neighbors in need.
Sadly, she passed away unexpectedly on May 11, 2024, with her family by her side.
Nearly a year after the passing of Rosemary, John followed her, leaving their children heartbroken.
Their children, Heather, Shannon, Carrie, Scott, and David, are mourning the loss of both their parents with deep sorrow.
Heather Swinburne Hall, one of their children, posted images of them along with heartfelt messages, saying:
She also requested that her father’s well-wishers donate to Grace Adventures, not plant a tree.
John Swinburne’s legacy in sports, particularly in track and field, is impactful and long-lasting.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to John Swinburne’s family, friends, and well-wishers.
Rest In Peace, Legend!
