Paul Ortiz, a talented and beloved kicker who played for multiple indoor and outdoor football teams, tragically passed away at the age of 29 following a hiking accident on Mount Whitney in California.

Ortiz, who was known for his kindness, dedication, and sportsmanship, leaves behind a grieving family, including his two young sons.

The accident occurred over the weekend as Ortiz hiked the 99 Switchbacks, a notoriously challenging trail.

Fellow hiker Wes Ostgaard recalled,

“Winds were extremely intense, and with the recent snowfall, the wind was blasting snow in our faces, covering the trail, and in many cases, caused the trail to become invisible.”

Despite the difficult conditions, Ortiz continued the climb. Unfortunately, he fell approximately 70 feet after sliding above the cables on the trail.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly to recover his body, finally returning him to his family in Chula Vista, California.

Ortiz made a lasting impact both on and off the field. As the former kicker for the Omaha Beef, he helped lead the team to back-to-back undefeated seasons and League Championships in 2023 and 2024.

Coach Ty Knight reflected,

“No game was bigger than the 2024 Double Overtime NAL Championship, and you were so clutch. You weren’t only a great player, you were a great teammate and a great man.”

Facebook

Teammates and friends shared heartfelt tributes across social media.

Tommy Armstrong Jr. wrote about Ortiz’s dedication and love for the game, recalling the moment just before Ortiz sealed a championship victory:

“I pray for your family and your beautiful two baby boys you leave behind as you join Heaven.”

Facebook

Brandon Lorello Stewart also remembered Ortiz’s generosity and sense of humor, saying,

“Sharing kicking stories, after-game parties, and building a friendship with him will always be cherished.”

Ortiz’s impact extended beyond football. Friends from college, like Josh Hawes, remembered him as a loyal companion through life’s challenges:

“He helped me through a lot of dark times, always with a smile on his face… I’m really going to miss you, buddy.”

Facebook

Victor Leventritt described Ortiz as one of the most genuine and happiest people he had ever met, praising his dedication to both family and sport.

The Omaha Beef organization expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a player who left an indelible mark:

“Paul will never be forgotten for his contributions on the field, and his many meaningful impacts he made off of it. Paul will always be a part of the Omaha Beef family; our thoughts and prayers are with the Ortiz family and his children.”

Facebook

Paul Ortiz’s passing is a stark reminder of the fragility of life, even for those who seem unstoppable.

His athletic talent, unwavering spirit, and kind nature will be remembered by everyone who had the privilege to know him.

Rest in peace, Paul Ortiz.
