Al Matthews, a former defensive back for the Green Bay Packers and the first Black coach in Texas Athletics history, passed away at 77.

Alvin Leon (Al) Matthews had a notable career in the NFL, playing for the Packers, Seattle Seahawks, and San Francisco 49ers.

He coached on Darrell Royal’s staff at the University of Texas from 1972 to 1973, primarily working in the spring.

This made him the first Black coach in Texas Athletics history. Tragically, he passed away on March 11, 2025, as announced by the University of Texas.

Javelina Hall of Famer Al Matthews Began His Coaching Career While Playing Professional Football!

Al Matthews had a remarkable career in both professional football and coaching.

He played eight NFL seasons, starting with the Green Bay Packers, where he appeared in 84 games with 64 starts and made 10 interceptions.

Matthews was a trailblazer in coaching, becoming the first Black coach in Texas Athletics history while still playing professionally.

Regarding his education, he attended Stephen F. Austin High School in Austin, Texas, before attending Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville).

From 1967 to 1969, he played on three LSC championship teams and was part of a national championship squad.

Throughout his career, Matthews received numerous accolades. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1985.

He was also recognized for his contributions to the community, including his involvement with the Celebrity Golf Tournament to support the Neighborhood Longhorn Program.

Additionally, he was involved in charitable work and community activities following his retirement from professional playing and coaching.

He helped create the Celebrity Golf Tournament to raise money for the Neighborhood Longhorn Program.

Also, he served on the executive committee of the National Football Players Association for three seasons.

When it comes to his marital endeavors, Al was married, but details about his wife are not available publicly. It is known that he had two children, Samantha and Lewis.

His family and well-wishers are mourning the loss of their beloved figure and are paying tribute, remembering his legacy.
