The multitalented TV host and former NFL cheerleader, Emily Compagno, has parents from diverse backgrounds: her father John is Italian, and her mother Katherine is of English, Bohemian, and German descent.

Born November 9, 1979, Emily attended the University of Washington (UW), earning a B.A. in Political Science.

After undergrad, she studied law and earned a J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 2006.

Despite being qualified for legal work, Emily tried out and, in April 2007, joined the Oakland Raiders cheerleading squad called Oakland Raiderettes.

Emily didn’t remain a regular cheerleader for long, but as a Raiderette (and later as captain), she represented the NFL more broadly.

Emily Compagno Credits Her Supportive Parents for Success, Especially Mother Katherine, Whom She Calls Her Role Model!

Emily was one of the three children of John Compagno and Katherine Bertsch.

Both her parents come from diverse ethnic backgrounds: her father, John, is of Italian descent, and her mother, Katherine, is of English, Bohemian, and German descent.

Her father has a military background and was a Commander in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps.

Not just his father, two of his uncles served in the U.S. Army, and a second cousin and his wife served as U.S. Navy aviators.

Her family history includes ancestors who fought in World War I.

Her great-great-grandmother (on her mother’s side), named Rosa Bertsch, took part in the 1930 “Gold Star Mothers Pilgrimage” to visit the graves of her children who died overseas in the war.

Moreover, while little is known about her mother, it is known that she was a flight attendant, which influenced Emily’s career path and worldview.

Within the family, Emily looks pretty fond of her mother, often showing support and sharing moments of honor for her on Mother’s Day posts.

Following her father’s military background and her mother’s strict household upbringing, Emily grew up in a household that valued culture and strong family principles.

In Case You Don’t Know

  • Emily has two sisters: Natalie Compagno and Julietta Compagno Skoog. Emily is the youngest.
  • She was one of five NFL cheerleaders selected by the USO to visit U.S. troops stationed in Iraq and Kuwait.
  • Before becoming a TV host, Emily was a criminal defense attorney in San Francisco, handling serious criminal cases.
