JaMarcus Russell, who was once the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 Draft, has been the subject of criticism in the past, particularly regarding his weight and conditioning.

When JaMarcus Russell, a former College Athlete from LSU, arrived at the Oakland Raiders in 2007, he weighed around 265 pounds, which was considered standard for a 6’6″ quarterback.

As the seasons passed, there were multiple concerns about his physicality expressed by the media, fans, and pundits.

In late 2009, during the NFL off-season break, teammates and coaches observed that Russel was carrying more weight than ideal, which was not acceptable for a top-tier program like the NFL.

The situation worsened, as the condition became public in the first quarter of 2010. Russel’s weight rose to around 290 Pounds, which was 25 Pounds more than when he first arrived.

High Body Weight the Major Part of his Downfall?

By April 2010, several media sources reported that he had gained over 300 pounds. Russel reportedly worked for a better physical condition in the 2010 off-season and arrived more fit at the team activities.

Though his condition was gradually improving, he faced legal troubles that affected his career.

In July 2010, he was arrested for possession of codeine syrup without a valid prescription, though he was not indicted, fe faced harsh criticisms from fans, and thought it was the reason for his off-field behavior.

He was released from the Raiders later that year. He made a comeback effort in late 2012/early 2013, when he weighed 315 pounds, the highest of his life, by dropping down to 270, he never secured a roster spot.

In 2016, Russell expressed a strong desire to return to the NFL and even had a workout session with the Chicago Bears, but he was not in anyone’s plans.

After an unsuccessful playing career, Russell chose to return to his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, and work as a Volunteer coach at Williamson High School, his alma mater, in 2018.

There, too, things ended with controversy. In 2023, Russel was fired from his position for allegedly misusing a $74.000 donation for the School’s Football program.

Chris Knowles, the donor, claimed that Russell deposited the check into a credit union and withdrew $55,000 without providing receipts or responding to inquiries.

In November 2024, the court ruled against Russell, ordering repayment and adding yet another controversy in his life.
