Former Rayen HS Football And Track Star Oscar Jene Smith, 85, Passes Away, Survived By Three Children!

Oscar Jene Smith, a beloved former football and track star from Rayen High School, passed away at the age of 85 on June 19, 2025, at Hospice House.

While there is no report suggesting the specific cause of his death, Oscar Jene Smith departed peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Oscar Jene Smith Dedicated Over Four Decades To A Successful Career At PSE&G!

Jene Smith was born on July 5, 1939, in Lowellville, Ohio, to Oscar and Marie Tubbs Smith.

At Rayen High School in Youngstown, he was recognized as a standout athlete in both football and track.

After his athletic career in high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1957 and proudly served until 1961.

It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Lorena Archibald Smith, and they married shortly afterward.

The couple shared 66 years of marriage until Lorena’s passing in 2024.

Oscar built a successful career with PSE&G in New Jersey and dedicated 42 years of service, retiring as an engineering technician and environmental specialist.

Beyond his professional achievements, Oscar remained connected to sports by coaching youth teams, sharing his passion and values with younger generations.

He was deeply committed to his community, spending years coaching youth sports and mentoring young athletes with integrity and care.

Oscar was a devoted family man, survived by his three children, Daniel, Laura, and Shari, as well as seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of all who knew him. His former students, coworkers, and neighbors extended heartfelt tributes.

Moreover, his legacy as a coach, veteran, and family patriarch is being remembered with respect and gratitude.

The community mourns the loss of a man who lived his life with humility and purpose. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

In honor of his memory, the family has requested donations to Hospice House in Poland, Ohio, where he spent his final days with dignity and comfort.
