On April 27, 2025, the Roselle Park community mourned the loss of a beloved figure, Michael JT Swirz, who was affectionately known as “Big Mike.”

At 71 years old, Mike passed away peacefully, surrounded by his devoted wife of 40 years, Kathy, and his loving family.

His son, Adam Swirz, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, prompting an outpouring of love and memories from those whose lives Mike touched.

Mike was born on June 3, 1953, in Roselle Park, New Jersey. He grew up with his brother, Allen, and sister, Cynthia “Cindy” Sweeney.

Mike had a strong connection to his hometown, and that connection never faded.

Mike’s life was woven into the fabric of Roselle Park, from his childhood on its streets to his decades of service in the Roselle Park Youth Baseball and Softball League (RPYBSL).

Mike was a natural athlete. His passion for softball and baseball shone brightly during his years playing in the RPYBSL.

Mike’s biggest impact came from his work as a coach. He had a loud voice and a kind heart.

He guided many young athletes, teaching them the game and important lessons about teamwork, resilience, and having fun.

One former player, Katelyn Morse, shared,

“My heart is broken. Best softball coach I could have. Gave me the nickname beans and can recall him saying beans to this day. May your soul rest in the ultimate paradise.”

His ability to make every player feel special was his gift.

Just weeks before his passing, on Opening Day in April 2025, the RPYBSL honored Mike for his years of dedication.

It was a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to the league and its young athletes.

Mike’s Charisma Was Magnetic, Showcasing A Larger-Than-Life Personality

Whether he was rolling the dice at the craps table in Bally’s Atlantic City or hosting one of his legendary holiday gatherings, he had a knack for turning strangers into friends.

His home was a hub of laughter, love, and celebration, where family and friends were always welcome.

Mike’s holiday parties were the stuff of legend—filled with good food, great stories, and his infectious enthusiasm for life.

At the heart of Mike’s world was his family. He and Kathy, his partner of four decades, built a beautiful life together, raising five children: Jessica, Adam, Emily, Julian, and Jake.

Mike was a proud father who always cheered on his kids’ endeavors. Later, he was a doting grandfather to his four grandchildren.

His love grew to his siblings, Allen and Cindy, and a wide circle of relatives, neighbors, and friends who considered him family.

Mike’s roots in Roselle Park ran deep, and his contributions and family’s legacy were tied together.

His father, Julius Swirz, was a captain of the Roselle Park Volunteer Fire Department, and his brother, Allen, continues to serve as an active, longtime member.

Mike was evidently proud of his family’s service, and he carried that same spirit of giving into everything he did.

After Mike’s passing, the community came together to honor his memory. A friend wrote,

These words echo the sentiments of many touched by Mike’s warmth, humor, and generosity.

The Roselle Park community will gather to celebrate Mike’s life in the coming days.

Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Mastapeter Funeral Home at 400 Faitoute Avenue, Roselle Park.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption in Roselle Park, followed by interment at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth.

Instead of flowers, Mike’s family has requested donations to the Roselle Park Volunteer Fire Department, a cause close to his heart.

Contributions can be made in his name to honor his father’s legacy and support his brother’s continued service.

Michael JT Swirz’s death has left a void in Roselle Park, but his legacy endures.

He was an inspiring coach, a cherished husband, a fiercely loving father and grandfather, and a friend who made every moment brighter.

Nothing will be quite the same without Big Mike, but his spirit lives on in the stories, laughter, and love he shared so freely.
