On Monday, April 7, 2025, Orange Lutheran High School shared some bittersweet news: Daniel Dunbar, their beloved head boys’ basketball coach, has decided to step down.
For those who’ve followed his journey, this marks the end of an incredible chapter that spans 20 years with the program, first as a player and then as a coach.
Dunbar Is Deeply Passionate About Orange Lutheran Basketball, And It Is More Than Just A Job For Him
He first laced up his sneakers as a student-athlete from 2005 to 2009, proudly wearing the Lancers’ jersey #20.
After graduating, he didn’t stray far, returning as an assistant coach before stepping into the head coach role for the past six seasons.
That’s 20 years of sweat, heart, and countless memories tied to this program.
As head coach, Dunbar led the Lancers to some unforgettable moments. His teams made it to the CIF Southern Section playoffs four times in six seasons.
In the 2022-23 season, Orange Lutheran advanced to the CIF-SS Division 2AA championship game and the CIF Southern California Regional Division II final.
It was a run that showcased his ability to inspire and lead. By the time he hung up his whistle, Dunbar had racked up 87 wins—not to mention the lives he touched along the way.
This past season, the Lancers finished with a 14-14 overall record and a 2-8 mark in the tough Trinity League.
They didn’t make the playoffs, but that doesn’t erase Dunbar’s impact on the program. His tenure wasn’t just about wins and building character and community.
In a statement released by the school, Dunbar opened up about his decision to step away.
“After 20 incredible years of being a part of the Orange Lutheran basketball program—first as a player and then as a coach—I have made the difficult decision to step down as head coach to focus more on my family.”

“I have truly been blessed to be part of such a special program. The opportunity to work alongside so many outstanding young men, dedicated coaches, and supportive families is something I will always cherish. The relationships and memories built over the years will stay with me forever. Though I’m stepping away from the sidelines, I remain deeply committed to the program and look forward to supporting it in new ways. I’m excited to watch Orange Lutheran basketball continue to grow and impact the lives of young men both on and off the court.”

“We are beyond grateful for Coach Dunbar, and words cannot fully capture the depth of our appreciation. He has truly embodied what it means to be a leader, both for our campus and our community”

There Is No Official Word On Daniel Dunbar’s Next Plans After Leaving Orange Lutheran
He’s keeping his cards close to his chest, and no public announcements have spilled the beans.
His statement hints at a personal shift focusing on family, but that doesn’t mean his coaching days are over for good.
Coaches like Dunbar often have a few paths ahead of them. He could take some time off to recharge and be with his loved ones, soaking in the free time he’s earned after two decades of dedication. Or maybe he’s eyeing another coaching gig.
High school basketball is his wheelhouse, so a move to another school, maybe one with a fresh challenge, could be in the cards.
