In Houston, Texas, tragedy struck as 20-year-old varsity football player De’Jon Tate and fellow student Raniah Rowley lost their lives in a tragic car accident.
The incident occurred on April 28, 2025, at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive.
The crash, which involved multiple vehicles, including a truck, left the community in shock and mourning.
De’Jon Tate was more than just a student-athlete; he was a beacon of light in Sugar Land, Texas.
Born to Elton Tate and Kristalyn Clay, along with his loving family, De’Jon grew up with a passion for sports and a spirit that inspired those around him.
As a member of the Fort Bend Austin High School Class of 2025, he played varsity football and stood out on the Boys Junior Varsity team from 2021 to 2024.
He was good at sports, not just on the football field. He also competed for the Richmond Elite YTC in long jump and meter dash events.
De’Jon’s infectious energy and resilience left a lasting impact.
One of his teachers shared a heartfelt tribute, saying,
“My heart shattered when I received the news of these two beautiful souls leaving us. DeJon was not just a student; he was a light in my life. His unique spirit gave me a reason to get up every day, to challenge myself, and to strive to be a better teacher. He taught me so much about resilience and joy, and at the end of the day, my greatest wish was always to see him—and all my students—thrive.

A Prayervigil was held to honor De’Jon and Raniah on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 7 p.m. at The People’s Church in Houston. Friends, family, and community members were invited to gather, share memories, and find solace in unity.
The vigil is a chance to reflect on the joy De’Jon brought to so many and to support one another through the pain.
Though his life was cut short, De’Jon’s legacy will endure in the hearts of those who knew him.
