Fred VanVleet’s journey to NBA stardom has been matched by a lifelong romance with his wife-to-be, Shontai Neal.

Fred VanVleet commands the court as one of basketball’s most impressive underdog success stories.

The Houston Rockets point guard began his NBA journey as an undrafted free agent with the Toronto Raptors in 2016, where he quickly established himself as a formidable player.

VanVleet’s tenacity and skill propelled him to win an NBA Championship with the Raptors in 2019, cementing his reputation as a clutch performer.

His career reached new heights when he earned his first All-Star selection in 2022, showcasing his development into an elite guard.

The Rockford, Illinois native holds multiple Raptors franchise records, including most points in a single game (54) and most assists in a game (20).

After seven successful seasons with Toronto, VanVleet signed with the Houston Rockets in July 2023, where he continues to excel as a playmaker, ranking seventh in assists (8.1 per game) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.67) during the 2023-24 season.

Fred VanVleet And Wife-To-Be Shontai Neal’s 12-Year Love Story

Fred VanVleet’s success extends beyond the basketball court, as he shares his life with his wife-to-be, Shontai Neal.

Their love story begins at Auburn High School in Rockford, Illinois, where they first met and began dating.

This high school romance has stood the test of time, spanning over 12 years and growing stronger with each passing season.

When VanVleet received a scholarship to play basketball at Wichita State University, Neal followed her heart and attended the same institution.

While VanVleet dominated on the court, Neal excelled academically, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Health/Health Care Administration/Management.

VanVleet’s soon-to-be wife balanced her studies with work as a waitress at Olive Garden and later as a front desk receptionist at The Inn at Tallgrass.

The couple’s relationship reached a new milestone in February 2023 when VanVleet proposed in a romantic setting adorned with red roses and candles.

Neal enthusiastically shared the news on social media, writing,

“I am literally the happiest girl in the world right now. This is seriously the best feeling ever, I am on cloud 9.”

The engagement marks the formalization of their already strong family unit, as they are parents to three children.

Neal has remained VanVleet’s biggest supporter throughout his journey from undrafted prospect to NBA All-Star.

She regularly attends his games and has embraced Toronto as their second home during VanVleet’s tenure with the Raptors.

VanVleet himself acknowledged this connection, stating,

“We love it here. My kids love it. My daughter is a dual citizen. Canada is really like a second home for us.”
