North Carolina native Gail Barbee Durham, 87, died on February 13, 2025. Gail Barbee, also known as Gail Jessup Barbee Durham, was a well-known high school athlete at Westfield School in Pilot Mountain.

Born on April 22, 1937, Gail grew up with six siblings and was a valedictorian of Westfield School in Pilot Mountain in 1955.

During her time at Westfield School in Pilot Mountain, Barbee loved sports and showed great interest in basketball and baseball.

Gail was named to the Frank Spencer All-Stars Northwest Team during her junior and senior years in high school.

Not only a gifted athlete, Gail was an academically strong woman, which led to her making her career in the corporate world.

The former high school athlete was also a devoted Christian and Brown Mountain Baptist Church member.

Gail’s family has yet to make a public statement and is currently mourning the loss of a beloved family member.

The family will gather at Brown Mountain Baptist Church Cemetry on February 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM.

Gail Barbee Durham Was Widowed Twice Before Her Demise

Gail Barbee Durham had faced two heartbreaks before she passed on February 13, 2025,

The former athlete was first married to James Larry Barbee. Like his wife, James Larry was a sportsman, but he passed away early during their marriage.

James died of a fatal heart attack on a baseball field.

Born on June 8, 1939, in Durham, North Carolina, James was only 35 when he died on September 4, 1974.

James graduated from Hanes High School, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and instead of going to college, he decided to pursue a baseball career.

He joined the baseball team Superior Senators of Nebraska State League in 1957 and was a pitcher.

During his time at Superior, James played 14 games and had an ERA of 3.

A year later, he joined Fort Walton Beach, a team in the Alabama-Florida League. James played 12 games for the side and had an ERA of 3.6.

During their marriage, Gail and James became parents one time with Gail giving birth to their son, Todd Barbee in 1961.

After losing James, Gail stayed a widow for 12 years. But after spending 12 years by herself, Gail found a companion in Frank Durham.

Frank and Gail were married for 23 years before Frank passed away unexpectedly on August 5, 2009.

After Gail married Frank, she became part of a larger family and became step-mom to two sons, David and Dwight, and three daughters, Frankie, Patsy, and Tammy.

During her lifetime, Gail Barbee Durham was a mom to Todd Barbee and step-mom to five kids, including Tammy, Frankie, Patsy, Dwight, and David Durham.

Gail’s son, Todd Barbee, is available on Facebook but has never been an avid social media user.

Todd lives in Lewisville, North Carolina, with his wife, Melanie Barbee. The couple share a daughter named Madeleine Barbee.

The only child of James and Gail Barbee, Todd works as a Key Account Manager at Geloso Beverage Group.

His wife, Melanie Barbee, is a branding expert and has been working for the past 18 years as a Consultant for MadCat Group LLC. She is also the owner of Rolly’s Baby Boutique.

Their daughter, Madeleine Barbee, graduated from Wake Forest University in 2019 with a Political Science degree.

She currently works as a Finance Director for JJ Singh for Delegate. She was also a Northeast Regional Candidate of Fundraising Director for DCCC in 2024.

One of Gail’s stepdaughters, Frankie Taylor, shared a Facebook post on Valentine’s Day but hasn’t shared any post on Gail’s passing.

  • After graduating high school, Gail started working in the banking field and retired at age 65 after having served as Vice President for Bank of America for 37 years.
  • During her time as a member of Brown Mountain Baptist Church, Gail also served as a treasurer for 18 years until her health declined.
