Marcus Nuamah, an outstanding basketball player and senior at Gaynor McCown High School, passed away on March 19, 2025, leaving his family and loved ones devastated.

While the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Marcus Nuamah, a Staten Island native from New York City, remain unclear, reports indicate that he was found with a firearm wound.

Marcus Nuamah was an outstanding student and a talented athlete who demonstrated his exceptional basketball skills as a point guard for the Gaynor High School men’s varsity basketball team, the Dragons.

Additionally, standing 6 feet tall and weighing 175 pounds, Marcus left an unforgettable mark on Staten Island basketball.

He played one season as a varsity starter, making an immediate impact as the captain of the Dragons.

His standout performance in 2024 saw him score a game-high 15 points in a tough non-league matchup.

His leadership was evident throughout the season, and in one of their most dominant performances, he helped the Dragons secure a commanding 63-35 victory.

While excelling in basketball, he was pursuing his education in Communication and Media Studies at Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School.

Marcus was deeply loved by his family and school community. He was not only known for his athletic skills but also for his kind, cheerful, and genuine nature.

Marcus Nuamah’s family has organized a fundraiser to cover his funeral and burial expenses

In response to the untimely death of their beloved Marcus Nuamah, the Staten Island community, and his family have organized a fundraiser to cover his funeral and burial expenses.

The fundraiser, organized by Yaw Nuamah, a family member from Staten Island, New York, aims to raise $30,000.

So far, 359 donations have been received, and the fundraiser has collected approximately $19,690, which is 66 percent of the total goal.

As the community continues to donate and support Marcus’s family during this difficult time, many of his loved ones are sending heartfelt condolences to his parents, family, and friends while paying tribute to the late basketball star.

Julia Alex, one of Marcus Nuamah’s best friends, expressed her sorrow on Instagram and recalled his memory.

She wrote,

“it is going to be hard to live in a world without you. everyone who knew even the slightest bit of you, knew that you were a light, a true beautiful soul. marcus, you have been such a constant in my life throughout the past 7 years that I was so lucky to have known you for. you quickly became one of my best friends, but more than that, you were a brother to me. there is a not a time where i knew you weren’t going to be in my corner. i hope you knew that i was always in yours as well. truly, a piece of me has died with you.”

Similarly, many of his loved ones and friends took to their social media to pay tribute to their beloved Marcus.

His high school friends organized a candlelight memorial on March 20, 2025.

Marcus Nuamah’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his teammates, coaches, and the Gaynor McCown community.

He will always be remembered for his talent, determination, and positive impact on those around him.
