While in Owen’s full second season, Smith attracted the Stars’ attention with his game points. Then, with London Knights, Gemel completed his OHL career.

On May 31, 2014, Smith signed a three-year entry-level contract with Dallas Stars.

Gemel played the other three seasons for Texas of the American Hockey League (AHL) until Dallas called up.

On December 6, 2018, the Boston Bruins claimed off Smith’s waivers from Dallas. However, before re-affiliating to Providence Bruins, he played three games with the Boston.

Gemel contributed 40 points in 47 games as an offensive player while on a contract with Providence.

Gemel was released as a free agent on June 25, 2019, because of the Bruins’ qualifying offer as an impending restricted free agent.

Tampa Bay Lightning

On July 8, 2019, Smith signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. After re-signing in 2021, the Canadian player has skated in five games and posted three assists.

During his professional career, in the NHL season of 2018-2019, Smith suffered from depression-like symptoms.

Gemel opened up himself and revealed the difficulties he faced before in his career. In two weeks, he was placed on waivers twice.
