Early Life & Education

Geno Smith was born Eugene Cyril “Geno” Smith III on October 10, 1990, in Lakemont, Georgia, United States, to his parents Eugene Smith Jr. and Tracey Sellers.

Smith’s nickname “Geno” comes from his grandfather, whose nickname was “Big Geno.”

He grew up with his younger brother Geonte Smith.

Geonte also aspired to become a professional football player and attended Geno’s alma mater Miramar High School to play high school football.

Similarly, Geno’s cousin Melvin Bratton played as a running back at the University of Miami in the mid-1980s, and his great uncle Danny was a hurdler at Florida State University.

Geno attended Miramar High School and played for the Miramar Patriots under head coach Damon Cogdell.

As a junior, he was invited to Elite 11 quarterback camp in Aliso Viejo, California.

His high school career went exceptionally well, and he was the #1 player in Broward County, according to South Florida Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald.

Likewise, he finished No. 2 in the voting for Mr. Florida and was named to the ESPN Top 150 prospects list.

With such a feat, it’s obvious several universities offered him athletic scholarships, but Geno chose West Virginia over offers from South Florida, Alabama, Boston College, and Florida State.

Age, Height, Weight & More

The Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith is 33 years old as of 2024. His recorded height and weight are 1.91 meters and 221 pounds, respectively.

Smith as a star NFL player, has to stay in his shape to perform well on the field, and that’s exactly what he does.

He works out every day and eats a balanced diet to maintain his shape.

On July 11, 2022, Geno posted some video clips of his workout with his teammate, Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf to his Instagram story tagging the star receiver.

Net Worth & Contracts

Net Worth

As of 2024, the Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has a net worth of $5 million.

Geno earns well from his career as a football player. Similarly, his other income sources include brand endorsement deals and investments.

Well, $5 million is a lot of money, but it does seem a bit less than his peers. For instance, Seahawk’s former QB Russell Wilson is worth $165 million as of 2024. What’s that about?

Perhaps it’s because Smith did not get a lot of playing time during his initial days in the league because of frequent injuries, which ultimately hit his value as a player, and no team in the league offered him a long-term deal.

Nevertheless, the 33 year old still has a long way to go, and who knows, he might hit the jackpot once his ongoing contract ends this season.

Contracts

In 2013, Geno signed a four-year $5.01 million contract with the New York Jets with a signing bonus of $2.03 million, a $1.25 million average annual salary, and a $3.06 million total guaranteed.

After his terms with the Jets ended, Smith signed a one-year $1.2 million contract with the New York Giants with a $1.2 million salary and $300,000 guaranteed.

On April 1, 2018, Geno signed a one-year $1 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.

After his release from the Chargers, Smith signed five one-year contracts with his current team Seattle Seahawks, with values ranging from few hundred thousand going as high as $3.5 million.

On April 14, 2022, Smith signed a one-year $3.5 million contract with the Seahawks. The deal has a $1.26 million base salary, a $500,000 signing bonus, a $1.69 million roster bonus, and a $50,000 workout bonus.

Similarly, it has different clauses benefitting the quarterback, such as a $585,000 Week 1 bonus, $65,000 per game active bonus, $500,000 for Pro Bowl + 20 TD passes, and $1 million for 4,000 passing yard incentives.

With that being said, QB Geno has earned more than $17,446,078 from his NFL career as of this writing.

Out of this, $5.08 million came from his time with Net York Jets, $1.18 million from the Giants, $1 million from the Chargers, and $10.23 million from Seahawks.

Career

After high school graduation, Geno went to West Virginia University and played for West Virginia Mountaineers from 2009 to 2012, after which he officially announced to enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

He received an invitation to NFL Scouting Combine, where his performance turned some heads with his athleticism but noted his ball placement needed improvement.

Geno was regarded as the top draft pick and was in attendance for the first round, as many scouts and analysts expected. However, he was not selected in the first round, which demoralized him, and he declined to be interviewed by ESPN.

He had even made plans to return home but later decided to attend the second day of the draft.

Anyhow, the New York Jets selected him 39th overall pick.

Smith made his NFL debut on August 9, 2013, in the first preseason game against the Detroit Lions.

He struggled during his first year and was often benched by the team.

To make the matter worse, on August 11, 2015, he was involved in an altercation with teammate IK Enemkpali over a $600 unpaid debt.

He did not just suffer a fractured jaw, but Seahawks ruled him out for 6-10 weeks in the aftermath.

Similarly, he injured his thumb on November 1, 2015, tore his ACL in the 2016 season, and was placed on injured reserve on October 26, 2016.

Geno has since played for the Giants, Chargers, and Seahawks.
