Steve Kerr, a former NBA champion turned head coach, has been married to his college sweetheart, Margot Brennan, for 34 years.
Margot Kerr was born Margot Brennan on November 30, 1967, in Tuscon, Arizona. She grew up alongside three siblings: Chris, Geoff, and Rachel Brennan.
Her mother, Karen Brennan, is an accomplished author, poet, and professor. Whereas Margot briefly worked in real estate and at an advertising agency in Los Angeles before becoming a full-time homemaker.
After attending Salpointe Catholic High School, Margot enrolled at the University of Arizona, where she would go on to meet her future husband.
It was in 1985, during her sophomore year, that Margot met Steve Kerr on a blind date arranged by his teammate and friend Bruce Fraser.
As cliched as it sounds, Steve, a growing basketball star at Arizona, and Margot clicked off immediately.
Margot graduated a year ahead of Steve and moved to Los Angeles for work. Regardless of the growing distance, they didn’t give up, and their bond only grew stronger.
Eventually, Steve and Margot walked down the aisle on September 15, 1990. They’ve been married for 34 years.

Margot stood by Steve during one of the most challenging times of his life, including the tragic assassination of his father, Malcolm H. Kerr, a Middle East scholar and president of the American University of Beirut, in 1984 in Beirut.
In the same way, Steve showed Margot immense respect and support during difficult moments.
At the time of Steve’s father’s assassination, Margot was also dealing with her own emotional turmoil, as her sister, Rachel Brennan, experienced a severe motorcycle accident in 1995.
The tragic accident led Rachel, a former standout runner, to fall into a coma and left her with severe brain damage and retrograde amnesia.
Margot and Steve supported her recovery, with Steve even sending a heartfelt message during a Bulls game broadcast to lift her spirits.
In her memoir, Being with Rachel, Margot’s mother, Karen Brennan, expressed her admiration for Steve, writing:
If I had to order a son-in-law from heaven, it would be Steve.
Steve and Margot Have Three Kids!
The college sweethearts, Steve and Margot, first experienced parenthood after their eldest son, Nick Kerr, was born in 1992.
Steve and Margot extended their family of three into four with the arrival of their second child, Madeleine Kerr, better known as Maddy, in 1995. Later, they completed their tight-knit family of five with their youngest, Matthew Kerr, born in 1998.
The couple adapted their lives in several ways because of Steve’s growing NBA career.
When their first child, Nick, was born in 1992, Steve was traded from Cleveland to the Orlando Magic just three weeks later.
The young family lived in a Marriott hotel for weeks as they adjusted their lives.
A year later, they moved to Chicago when Steve joined the Bulls, where he would win three championships alongside Michael Jordan. It was during this time, Margot, welcomed two more kids, Madeleine and Matthew.
One of Steve and Margot’s Kids Followed in His Father’s Footsteps!
Steve and Margot’s eldest, Nick, followed in his father’s footsteps, playing basketball at the University of San Diego before transitioning into coaching.
He now serves as an assistant coach with the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State’s G League affiliate.
Whereas, the second child, Maddy, excelled as a volleyball player at UC Berkeley.
Later, after graduating from Berkeley’s School of Law in 2021, she transitioned into a legal career. Maddy now works as a corporate associate at Gunderson Dettmer.
Unlike two other kids, Matthew, the youngest, opted for a creative route. He is working in the film industry on projects like Ted Lasso and Clone High.
The family grew closer during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when all three children returned to live under one roof with Steve and Margot.
Steve described the time as “total chaos” but cherished the rare opportunity that reconnected them all.
