Gore Mountain Skier Kevin Colwell Dies In Weekend Accident Near Sagamore Trail

The sudden passing of Kevin Colwell, 53, in a skiing accident on February 8, 2025, has left the community mourning.

Colwell passed away from severe injuries close to the area of the Sagamore Trail at Gore Mountain Ski Resort in North Creek, New York.

New York State Police responded to the resort following a report of an injured skier around 11 a.m. Saturday.

They arrived to find Colwell seriously injured. Bystanders and ski patrol staff immediately attempted life-saving measures, but Colwell was pronounced dead at the scene.

 Police said in a statement-:

“Despite their efforts, the skier was declared deceased at the scene, The investigation into the incident is ongoing.’

It is not clear what Colwell’s injuries were and whether he was alone or with companions when he suffered them.  

According to police reports, Colwell was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Following the incident, Gore Mountain officials closed the Burnt Ridge area of the resort on Saturday afternoon but expected it to reopen on Sunday.

Kevin Was The Founder And CEO Of The Colwell Law Group, LLC, Based In Albany, New York.

Colwell resided in Guilderland with his wife, Mary (a graduate of Albany Law School), and their three children.

Kevin was born to Michael and Barbara Colwell, U.S. Army veterans. He had a sister, Karen Grandinetti, with whom he shared his childhood.

He graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and Government from SUNY Geneseo.

Later, in 1997, he received a Doctor of Law degree from the University of Dayton School of Law.

After graduating, Kevin joined the Columbia County Public Defender’s Office in Hudson, New York, and stayed there for several years.

He then served as an Associate at Roland, Fogel, Koblenz & Petroccione, LLP, for five years.

Since 2005, he has been the owner and Managing Partner of The Colwell Law Group with his wife, Mary Colwell.

Colwell was committed to family law, helping families with divorce and child custody matters.

Colwell received numerous awards for his advocacy, including being selected as a Super Lawyer in 2020, earning a Top 100 designation from The National Advocates, and receiving a high rating from Avvo as a top divorce attorney. Mr. Colwell has been practicing law since 1998

Kevin Colwell Is Remembered As A Devoted Father, A Loyal Friend, Man Of Sharp Wit And Kindness

The Colwell Law Group, LLC, posted an official statement on Facebook following the death of its founder and CEO.

Jennifer Stevens, the firm’s chief operating officer, expressed the deep sorrow felt by the company, noting-:

“Kevin built not just a business, but a family, and the loss of his presence is felt deeply by all who had the privilege of working with him.”

Those who knew Kevin described him as a great friend and father, brilliant, friendly, and with a great sense of humor.

Many have expressed their heartfelt condolences to his family and comment-:

“This is very sad to hear. I worked for The Colwell Law Group and Kevin was a loving husband, father and compassionate attorney. Prayers to Mary and their children during this difficult time.”

A former worker at Colwell Law Group remembered Kevin and wrote:-

“Oh this is so sad. Kevin was a great man, and boss. I loved my time working with Colwell Law group. My heart goes out to the entire staff, Mary, and their boys. Please say many prayers for them all.”

Kevin Colwell was known for enjoying outdoor activities, including skiing, with his family and two dogs, Elvis and Lucy.
