Zach Edey was born to Chinese Canadian parents, who were both athletes. Thanks to his parents’ genes, he dominated the preseason game, winning over the Indiana Pacers with an impressive 23 points.

Zachry Cheyne Edey, born May 14, 2002, in Toronto, plays professional basketball for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA.

He began playing basketball in 10th grade at Leaside High School in Toronto before moving to the U.S.

At IMG Academy in Florida, Zach developed his basketball skills under coach Daniel Santiago’s guidance.

During his freshman year at Purdue, Zach was recognized well in Big Ten history, averaging 8.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Recently, in the NBA preseason game 2024, despite Brandon Clarke starting at center, Zach scored 23 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had one steal.

Zach Edey Is Blessed To Have Athletic Parents Who Wholeheartedly Support Him

Zach Edey grew up playing baseball and ice hockey, as he was raised by his athletic Chinese Canadian parents, Julia and Glen Edey.

Even though Julia and Glen never pressured Zach to play basketball, they fully supported him when he chose the sport.

In fact, Julia traveled with Zach to prep schools and basketball camps across Canada and the U.S. for his journey.

Now, she spends part of each season near Purdue, attending his games and showing unwavering support for her son.

Glen also regularly attends Zach’s games and remains a constant, supportive presence throughout Zach’s basketball career.

Additionally, Julia created custom merchandise featuring Zach’s nickname, “Big Maple,” which often appears on Mackey Arena’s Jumbotron.

She also actively supports Zach on social media, though she takes more pride in his approach than his accomplishments.

Regarding her background, Julia grew up in a working-class Chinese Canadian household, learning the importance of hard work early on.

Therefore, Zach credits his mother with instilling the same work ethic she developed growing up in her family.

Likewise, Glen, who grew up in Canada, shares a strong work ethic and supports Zach’s athletic interests.

Afterward, when Zach received a Division I scholarship, Julia retired from her career as a mechanical engineer, fulfilling her promise.

In retirement, Julia pursued beekeeping, managing three beehives in Canada and volunteering with local organizations.

Currently, Julia splits her time between Indiana and Canada, supporting Zach, hosting team dinners, and engaging with Purdue fans.

Although Glen keeps a lower profile, he frequently attends Zach’s games, including Purdue’s Big Ten Championship win.

Ultimately, Julia and Glen continue to play an active role in Zach’s life, showing what true parental support looks like.
