Halil Mutlu Early Life & Parents

Halil was born on July 14, 1973, in Postnik, Bulgaria. He was born to father Alil Mutlu and mother Hatice Mutlu. Further, his parents were of Turkish lineage. 

Consequently, he followed the footsteps of his ethnicity and defected to Turkey in 1989. Shortly after he arrived in Turkey, Halil was inspired by Naim Suleymanoglu. 

Naim was a professional Turkish weightlifter. He left Bulgaria to escape the “Bulgarization” of the Turkish minority by the government. 

Besides, after arriving in Turkey, Halil changed his name from Hubenov. Halil did it to reaffirm his Turkish heritage. 

Shortly after, he goes on to be one of the members of Anakara. It is one of the most renowned weightlifting teams in Turkey. 

Additionally, Halil officially began to competitively weight lift at 18. Moreover, he was ranked 5th in the 55 kg weight division during Barcelona’s 1992 Olympic games. 

Also, shortly after, Halil swept both the World Championship and European Championship.

However, he only lost first place in an international competition to Zhang Xiasnseng. The Chinese weightlifter bested Halil at the 1995 World Championships.

Halil is a happily married man. He has been married since the early 1990s. Similarly, Mutlu exchanged vows with the beautiful Seher Mutlu.

The Turkish weightlifter won the World Championship and European Championship in 1994. Shortly after his triumph, Mutlu became a household name in weightlifting. 

Furthermore, Halil Mutlu made his first appearance in the Olympics in 1992 in the 52 kg category. During the respective tournament, the athlete finished in the fifth position.

Additionally, Mutlu became the world champion and world record holder in 1996 in the 54kg category. He broke the previous world record and won the gold medal by 7.5 kg. 

Moreover, he beat Adrian Jigău by 20kg during the 1996 World Championship. Consequently, Mutlu set a new world record by winning the former silver medalist. 

Record after record

Shortly after, Halil Mutlu set an Olympic record and won gold at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta. 

By the end of 1999, Halil had set over 20 world records and won the gold at the 1999 World Championship. 

Consequently, he was named Turkey’s Best Sportsman of the Year in the same year.

Also, Halil Mutlu set three world records, one in clean and jerk (167.5 kg), one on snatch (138 kg), and one in total weight lifted (305 kg).

Injury

Halil temporarily moved to the 62 kg class because of a shoulder injury in 2003.

Furthermore, his career was in jeopardy after a ruptured biceps and torn right rotator—consequently, the injury sideline Hali for most of 2002.  

However, Halil Mutlu won his third consecutive gold during the 2004 Olympic Games. 

Halil out lifted Wu Meijin by 5 kg in the snatch during the event. In addition, he extended his lead in the earn by 7.5 kilograms to earn the victory. 

Besides, Mutlu had won the world championship five times by the end of the Athens Olympics in 2004. 

Steroid Ban

Shortly after his Olympic win in Athens, Mutlu tested positive for anabolic steroids. Consequently, he was banned from sports for two years by the International Weightlifting Federation. 

However, Mutlu insisted that he did not take the steroids of his awareness. Nonetheless, the athlete and the Turkish Weightlifting Federation for “anti-doping violations.” 

Further, he began to train for the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Shortly after, Halil would announce his withdrawal from the competition in July 2008. 

Halil stated that he was unable to lift his target weight in practice regarding his withdrawal. Consequently, he was expelled from the ASKI as a penalty.

Moreover, Halil Mutlu announced his retirement on October 31, 2008.
