Haskell Indian Nations University has named Mason Finley as its new Head Track and Field Coach, and the announcement has sparked excitement across the community.

Born on October 7, 1990, to parents Jared and Lisa Finley in Kansas City, Missouri, he grew up alongside his two sisters, Matia and Rebecca.
His father, Jared, an All-American discus thrower for the Wyoming Cowboys in 1979, likely sparked Mason’s passion for the sport.
At Buena Vista High School, Finley made headlines by setting a national high school record in the discus throw with a toss of 72.09 meters at the High Altitude Challenge in Alamosa, Colorado.
He also claimed gold medals in both the shot put and discus throw at the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships, showcasing his dominance as a young athlete.
Finley’s success continued in college. He spent three years at the University of Kansas before transferring to the University of Wyoming in 2012, where he earned eight NCAA All-American honors.
As a professional, he represented Team USA as a discus thrower at the 2016 Rio and 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.
In 2017, he reached a career pinnacle by winning a bronze medal at the World Championships, cementing his status as a world-class competitor.
After retiring from competition, Finley turned his focus to coaching and quickly proved his talent for developing athletes.
He spent four years as the throws coach at Mill Valley High School, where he guided three athletes to state championships.
At Haskell, his one-year stint as the throws coach was equally impressive, with his athletes securing seven individual conference titles and contributing to the men’s team’s 2024 conference championship win.
Now, as the Head Track and Field Coach, Finley is ready to lead the entire program to new heights.
