Holton High School Student-Athlete Lane Alan Pruett, Dies At 15, Leaving His Parents Ben And Shelby Behind!

A 15-year-old sophomore at Holton High School, Lane Alan Pruett, passed away unexpectedly on April 20, 2025; however, the details of his sudden demise remain unknown.

Lane Pruett is survived by his parents, Benjamin Alan and Shelby Lee (Duncan) Pruett, and two sisters, Emeliya and Gemma Pruett.

Neither his mother, Shelby, a grade teacher, nor his father, Benjamin, a journeyman plumber, has broken their silence on the tragic passing of their son.

Shelby is a grade teacher at USD 336 Holton Elementary. She previously worked as the restaurant general manager at Dairy Queen Grill & Chill.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Elementary Education from Wichita State University.

Benjamin is a journeyman plumber at Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 441. He studied HVAC and Plumbing at Northeast Kansas Technical Center.

A married couple of 12years, Benjamin Alan and Shelby Lee walked down the aisle on September 22, 2012.

Likewise, he leaves behind paternal grandparents Mark and Vickie (Lierz) Pruett of Holton, KS; maternal grandparents Dora and Noel Clark and David Duncan, both of Holton, KS; great-maternal grandmother Monie Wheeler of Holton, KS; and several cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Lane’s family, which includes several aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends, also mourns the vibrant young man who touched their lives.

Lane Alan Pruett Played Football In Holton High School!

Born on May 18, 2009, in Topeka, Lane Pruett was a multi-talented and engaged sophomore at Holton High School.

He enthusiastically participated in football, wrestling, Notables, FFA, and PVR 4-H, embodying the spirit of teamwork and dedication.

During the summers, he served as a lifeguard at the Holton Swimming Pool, where his warm presence and sense of responsibility shone brightly.

Back in February 2024, Lane Pruett earned 2nd place in the HS Boys Wrestling Team at the Big 7 League WR Meet.

Curtis Becker, Lane’s teacher at Holton High School, expressed her grief and wrote an eulogy on his memory, which reads:

He was a good kid who I enjoyed having a class. When I heard the news, my mind immediately flashed back to that fun-loving kid who sat at the table by the door and sometimes didn’t quite have his hair all come down during first block. Love and prayers to his family and friends. He will be missed!

A devout Christian, Lane Pruett was a devoted St. Dominic’s Catholic Church member.

Lane’s joyful spirit was ever-present, whether he was spending time with his family, joking with friends, or pursuing his many passions.

The Holton community has rallied to honor Lane’s memory. A funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Holton High School, followed by burial at Holton Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m.

In keeping with Lane’s unique personality, the family has requested that attendees “Live Like Lane” by wearing shorts and cowboy boots to the visitation and funeral.

During this difficult time, we offer our heartfelt condolences to Lane Pruett’s parents, siblings, and extended family.
