Following his successful high school coaching career, Ole Miss hired him as an assistant athletic director.
Similarly, he served as a head coach at Lambuth and Arkansas State before returning for his second stint at Ole Miss.

Hugh Freeze tied the knot with his wife, Jill, in 1992 at a Baptist church in Independence, Mississippi.
Together, they have welcomed three daughters, Ragan, Madison, and Jordan.
The Louisville-born Jill graduated from Southern Miss with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Secondary Education.
She also earned her master’s degree in Secondary Education and has worked in education for ten years, teaching various high school grades.
Moreover, while Freeze was working at Ole Miss, Jill led regular Bible studies with the coaches’ wives.
Currently, she focuses on different works of the Freeze Foundation, established by the couple in 2014, to help needy children.
Regarding their kids, the eldest, Ragan, married Ryan Reynolds, and they have a baby girl, Hudson Blair Reynolds, born in July 2023.
Similarly, Jordan also tied the knot with Mark McManus in January 2022.
On the other hand, the youngest daughter Madison currently attends Auburn University after completing high school at Oxford High School.
Hugh Freeze Controversy During His Time At Ole Miss
In 2017, Freeze resigned from his head coach position at Ole Miss amidst swirling allegations.
The school officials found a pattern of phone calls to a number associated with a female escort service.
Following his resignation, the then-assistant head coach Matt Luke became interim head coach.
Ole Miss Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter announced the news after confirming a pattern of personal misconduct inconsistent with the standard of the school’s football team leader.
Freeze, who had about $2 million left on his contract and $10.15 million in the next two seasons, was dissolved.
This kind of similar call pattern was traced back to 2012, shortly after he was hired. The NCAA accused the Rebels of 21 rules violations, with 17 during Freeze’s tenure.
Moreover, Houston Nutt sued Freeze and Ole Miss in federal court, accusing them of planning a smear campaign against him.
The lawsuit alleged that Freeze and other school officials created a “false narrative” to place blame on Nutt.
However, Freeze chose not to comment on Nutt but was disappointed that the issue came before their game in Hoover, Alabama.
