Jarred Shaw, a skilled basketball player known for his time with teams like the Tangerang Hawks and Prawira Bandung, has recently made headlines for reasons unrelated to his athletic skills.

Jarred Dwayne Shaw was born in Dallas, Texas, on September 29, 1990. He went from being a talented high school athlete to playing professionally overseas.

His journey is closely connected to the strong support of his mother, Johnetta “Jay” Perry.

However, a recent arrest for smuggling marijuana in Indonesia has cast a shadow over his career, leaving fans and family to face the consequences of his actions.

Johnetta Perry, a proud Dallas native and 1976 South Oak Cliff High School graduate, has built Jarred’s life around this.

As a single mother raising four children, Jay encouraged her son’s dreams, particularly his passion for basketball.

Her dedication was evident in 2014 during Jarred’s senior night at Utah State University.

For the first time, Jay traveled to see her son play in person at the Spectrum arena.

In a heartwarming moment, Jarred walked onto the court with his mother by his side, holding his jersey to thunderous applause.

That night, he delivered a double-double, leading the Utah State Aggies to a victory over Wyoming—a memory that encapsulates the bond between mother and son.

Jay’s support wasn’t limited to emotional encouragement, he played an active, ongoing role in Jarred’s life.

From his days at David W. Carter High School in Dallas, where he sharpened his skills as a forward, to his college career at Utah State, she cheered him on every step.

Her influence helped shape Jarred into a disciplined athlete, known for his versatility as a center and power forward.

Jarred’s Talent On The Court Opened Doors To A Professional Career That Took Him Globally

After going undrafted in the 2014 NBA Draft, he was selected by the Santa Cruz Warriors with the 18th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Development League Draft.

This marked the beginning of a career that saw him play in various leagues, from Mexico’s Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) with Dorados de Chihuahua in 2019 to Club Trouville in Montevideo, Uruguay, during the 2019–20 LUB season.

In 2023, Jarred joined the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL), playing for Prawira Bandung before moving to the Tangerang Hawks.

His size, skill, and court vision made him a valuable asset, earning him respect among teammates and fans.

But his career in Indonesia came to an abrupt halt in May 2025, when a shocking incident changed the trajectory of his life.

On May 7, 2025, Jarred Shaw was arrested at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia for attempting to smuggle 132 pieces of marijuana-infused candy, disguised as vitamin supplements or regular candy.

The package, sent from Thailand, was flagged during a routine customs scan, and subsequent tests confirmed the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in marijuana.

According to authorities, Jarred admitted to ordering the drugs for personal use, choosing deceptive packaging to evade detection.

The arrest was a public spectacle, with reports noting that Jarred shouted “help!” as he was known, a cry that hinted at his distress.

Indonesia’s strict anti-narcotics laws, governed by Law No. 35 of 2009, classify marijuana as a Category 1 narcotic, carrying penalties as severe as life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

The investigation revealed that Jarred had been in contact with a supplier in Thailand, though there’s no evidence the drugs were intended for local distribution.

He is currently detained at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police Station, with authorities probing whether he was part of a larger drug network.

The fallout was swift. The IBL blacklisted Jarred, banning him from future competitions, and the Tangerang Hawks terminated his contract.

For Johnetta Perry, The News Of Her Son’s Arrest Must Have Been Devastating

The mother who once glowed with pride as Jarred raised his jersey on senior night now faces the reality of her son’s legal troubles in a foreign country.

While little is known about Jarred’s father or his other siblings, it’s clear that Jay has been the family’s anchor, and this ordeal likely weighs heavily on her.

His arrest doesn’t erase the years of hard work or the love of a mother who believed in him, but it underscores the consequences of choices made in a moment.

As the legal process unfolds, Jarred’s future hangs in the balance, and his family, especially Johnetta, will undoubtedly remain his biggest supporters, even in the face of adversity.

Jarred Shaw’s journey, marked by successes and a devastating fall, shows how quickly dreams can falter, leaving a mother’s love as the one constant in a storm.
