Brad Underwood, the head coach of the Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team, recently garnered widespread attention for a heartfelt gesture that resonated deeply within the sports community.

Prior to a game against Chicago State, Underwood presented a basketball, autographed by the entire team, to Linda Hall, the wife of Big Ten Network announcer Mike Hall.

Linda, an Illinois alumna and passionate supporter of the basketball program, had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was on the cusp of beginning chemotherapy treatments.

Regarding the gesture shown by Brad and the team, Mike expressed,

“It was such a lovely gesture. My wife, about a month ago, found out that she had breast cancer…the next journey is chemo, which starts tomorrow. The outpouring of support and love from friends, from acquaintances, from strangers, has been just a delightful slice of human decency at a time when we really needed it. My wife’s a huge Illini hoops fan, so she’s going to freak out when she sees it. “

Brad eventually transitioned into coaching full-time, beginning as an assistant coach at Western Illinois University in 1992.

The couple spent 11 years there, during which Susan taught elementary school and supported Brad as he built his coaching career.

Together, they raised three children: Tyler, Katie, and Ashley.

In a candid revelation, Brad shared the difficulties he experienced upon his departure from Oklahoma State to Illinois.
