Brad Underwood, the head coach of the Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team, recently garnered widespread attention for a heartfelt gesture that resonated deeply within the sports community.

Prior to a game against Chicago State, Underwood presented a basketball, autographed by the entire team, to Linda Hall, the wife of Big Ten Network announcer Mike Hall.

Linda, an Illinois alumna and passionate supporter of the basketball program, had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was on the cusp of beginning chemotherapy treatments.

Regarding the gesture shown by Brad and the team, Mike expressed,

“It was such a lovely gesture. My wife, about a month ago, found out that she had breast cancer…the next journey is chemo, which starts tomorrow. The outpouring of support and love from friends, from acquaintances, from strangers, has been just a delightful slice of human decency at a time when we really needed it. My wife’s a huge Illini hoops fan, so she’s going to freak out when she sees it. “

This act of kindness not only highlighted Underwood’s compassionate nature but also underscored the close-knit and supportive environment he fosters within the Illinois basketball community.

Brad Underwood And Susan Are College Sweethearts

However, this recent gesture from Brad has ignited the public’s interest in knowing more about Brad’s personal life, especially about his wife.

Brad is happily married to Susan Underwood, and their partnership reflects a story of love, resilience, and mutual support.

The two met during college and married shortly after Brad graduated.

In the early years of their marriage, Brad balanced a career in insurance while applying for coaching jobs.

Susan, armed with a teaching degree but lacking a license to teach in Texas, worked as a cashier at JC Penny to support their family during these challenging times.

Brad eventually transitioned into coaching full-time, beginning as an assistant coach at Western Illinois University in 1992.

The couple spent 11 years there, during which Susan taught elementary school and supported Brad as he built his coaching career.

Together, they raised three children: Tyler, Katie, and Ashley.

Susan Has Been Constant Support During Tough Times

However, the Underwood family’s journey has not been without its challenges.

In a candid revelation, Brad shared the difficulties he experienced upon his departure from Oklahoma State to Illinois.

His son, Tyler, experienced an assault, and his daughters had their car vandalized, incidents that underscored the emotional and physical toll that professional transitions can impose on a coach’s family.

Throughout these adversities, Susan’s resilience and support have been instrumental in navigating the complexities of life in the public eye.

Susan Underwood’s belief in her husband’s abilities has been crucial to his career trajectory.

“Our family knew what Brad was capable of. We had so much fun along the way. It made us a very tight-knit family. We could be happy wherever we were.”

Her steadfast encouragement allowed Brad to chase his coaching dreams without pressure to pursue a more conventional path.

Susan’s adaptability and resilience helped the family navigate the challenges of frequent relocations, a hallmark of a coaching life.

Her role extends beyond that of a supportive spouse.

Her presence at games and events and her engagement with players and their families contribute to the familial atmosphere that Coach Underwood emphasizes within his program.
