Ion Oncescu is a legendary athlete specializing in arm wrestling’s professional sports and has multiple records to his name.

Born on April 25, 1978, he was grown and brought up in Bucharest, Romania’s capital city.

Despite excelling in the scene, neither the whereabouts of his parents nor the source of the boy’s sporting passion in arm-wrestling is known.

However, Oncescu does recall making plans to flee the capital of Communist Romania when he was just 12 years old.

Therefore, he started preparing early and began an intense training regimen that included regular jogging and swimming.

So that by the time he reached 17, he would be prepared for any obstacle that might arise during his planned escape from the country.

Likewise, Oncescu’s exposure to sports and first experience began with FC Dinamo București, where he played youth football.

However, he soon discovered tennis to be more appealing and began training with Florin Segărceanu, a famous ex-Wimbledon player.

The Romanian Warrior

Ion Oncescu captured his first national arm-wrestling title when he was 18 years old without any prior training.

Despite beginning specific arm-wrestling training in 2005, nine years after his debut, he has been an undisputed champion ever since.

He missed the win by securing 2nd and 3rd position in the left and right arm category during the 2006 World Championship.

The first major title win

Despite a series of shortcomings, Ion never looked back as he went on to win the main arm-wrestling championship in the World during the 2007 event.

He bagged his first world title at the XXIXth World Arm-wrestling Championships hosted by Bulgaria at 29.

Ion Oncescu had difficulty transitioning in the left-arm category since he was placed in a challenging group.

Furthermore, he had to compete in ten matches for the left-arm championships, and five of his rivals were former world champions.

He was upset by the Bulgarian champion Stoyan Golemanov in the second round as he lost to him.

Additionally, he had to engage in eight matches to qualify for the right arm championship.

Furthermore, the event was scheduled the next day, and he had to face the same Dzambolat Tsoriev, who was in search of redemption.

Oncescu had a scary start as he lost the first match but won the next two establishing himself as the world champion for the right arm.

Consequently, he became the undisputed world champion for the entire tournament after dominance in both the arm categories.
