Alex Ernst, a longtime Iowa State football staffer, tragically lost his life in a car accident in Kansas on May 6, 2025.

He was among eight people who lost their lives in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 169 in Franklin County.

Ernst, 37, was driving a Subaru Legacy when it collided with a GMC Yukon. Both vehicles caught fire after the collision, resulting in the tragic loss of eight lives.

As per the report, the Yukon attempted to pass a slower vehicle when it moved into the northbound lane, where Ernst’s Subaru was traveling.

Alex Ernst’s Parents, Though They Have Remained Private, Are Mourning His Tragic Loss!

Alex Ernst was a football video production specialist at Iowa State University, where he worked for nearly two decades.

He began his journey with the Cyclones football program as a student and later transitioned into a full-time role after earning his degrees.

Ernst completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 2010 and later earned a Master’s Degree in Higher Education in 2014, both from Iowa State University.

His work in video operations was crucial to the football program. He filmed practices and games, which helped the coaching staff prepare during and between seasons.

Moreover, his LinkedIn profile highlights his skills in event planning, public speaking, Microsoft Office, social media, and research, reflecting a strong background in media and communication.

Ernst’s life was tragically cut short in a devastating car accident, leaving behind his family, loved ones, and passion for Iowa State football.

While details about his parents remain private, his godmother, Pamela Jeanne Ohrt, paid tribute to him, saying:

Our beloved godson. We are heartbroken over this loss. Alex loved the Iowa State football program. He will be deeply missed.

Similarly, his brother, Chris Ernst, posted a picture of himself with Alex, expressing his love for him and how much he misses him.

ISU Athletics Director, Jamie Pollard, Describes Alex Ernst As an Unsung Hero!

Ernst’s passing impacted his family and the Iowa State University community.

He was a dedicated video production specialist who had worked with the team for nearly two decades.

The Iowa State Athletics Department deeply felt his loss, with Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard describing him as an unsung hero:

We are devastated by the tragic passing of Alex Ernst,For nearly 20 years behind the scenes, first as a student and then as a full-time employee, Alex was an unsung hero who played an important role our department’s success through his outstanding work in video operations. Everyone in the ISU Athletics Department family is keeping Alex’s loved ones and friends in their thoughts and prayers, as well as the other individuals lost in this terrible accident.

Similarly, Head Coach Matt Campbell also expressed heartbreak over Ernst’s passing, saying:

We are heartbroken by this news,Alex was an important and valued member of our football family and had a special relationship with so many in our program. He was exceptional at his job and took great pride in what he did. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy.

Players, including quarterback Rocco Becht, shared personal tributes, remembering Ernst’s dedication and positive energy to the team.
