The First Lady of Alabama Football, Terry Saban, has been beside her husband for 52 years. The childhood lovers turned husband-wife, Nick and Terry Saban, left their mark on every place Nick coached during his illustrious career.
Saban informed the Tide of his decision in a team meeting on Wednesday. Though early reports speculated that Terry could be sick, Nick Saban has cited the reason for his retirement to be his age and health.
In his coaching career, Nick Saban won seven national titles, one at LSU (2003) and six at Alabama (2009, 2011-12, 2015, 2017, 2020). In his statement, Saban called the university “a very special place” to him and his wife.
Is Terry Saban Sick? Nick Saban Wife Health And Illness Update
Nick Saban wife, Terry Saban, isn’t sick, and her health isn’t the reason for Nick’s retirement. Nick’s biggest supporter and cheerleader, his wife, Terry, has released a statement on his behalf from the Nick’s Kid Foundation Facebook page.
Terry wrote, “It has been an incredible run these last 17 years at the University of Alabama, and we take with us many amazing memories. We hope that the Saban legacy will be about helping others and making a positive difference in people’s lives as well as the winning tradition on the field.”
In her statement, Terry hasn’t stated anything related to personal illness, but as reported by CBS, Nick is leaving Alabama after 17 years, citing age and health concerns.
Saban, 71, is famously known as the one who never gets tired. It was big news when the former Alabama head coach caught COVID-19 in 2020. His assistant coaches for years and years have sworn that Saban never gets sick.
Previously, ESPN insider Chris Low joked that Saban could be coaching for another 20 years. But he added that the number could be closer to 8 or 9 years than one or two.
The legendary football coach is notorious for his consistent eating habits, including eating the same thing for meals. Previously, the coach said his motivation for getting up in the mornings was to have a cup of coffee and two Debbie cookies.
He even promoted his favorite cookies for an ESPN commercial in 2010. But the age might have finally caught up with the famous football coach as he announced his retirement.
Who Is Terry Saban? Nick Saban Wife
Known as Miss Terry by the Crimson Tide fanbase, Terry Saban married the football coach in 1971. The couple has two kids-Nicholas and Kristen Saban.
With her husband, Terry has been involved in several charitable works. The two established Nick’s Kids Foundation in memory of Nick’s late father, Nick Saban Sr. The foundation was established in 1998, during Nick’s time at Michigan State University.
The organization raises money to help support children, students, teachers, and family causes and gives community members chances to volunteer.
In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina hit the Miami area, the couple helped in relief efforts alongside Miami Dolphins’ players and wives.
The couple is devout Catholics and met for the first time in seventh grade at a 4-H science camp. Their love grew stronger when Nick was at Kent State and Terry taught at West Virginia. They were only 21 years old when they wed.
In 2013, in her interview with the Wall Street Journal, Terry said the Alabama fans aren’t so appreciative. She said the people have been spoiled by success and have become less grateful toward her husband’s work.
It is to be seen whether the person replacing Nick Saban can do justice to the work done by him.
