James Hagens And His Elder Brother, Michael, Were Both Trained By Their Father, Michael Hagens Sr.!

Behind every great athlete is a strong support system, and for James Hagens, his parents and family have been a cornerstone of his success. James grew up in a household where hockey was central to life.

His father, Michael Hagens, a former defenseman and a passionate New York Islanders fan, was the one who introduced the family to the sport.

Michael had a backyard rink in the house, where countless memories of late-night games and epic sibling battles were created that often ended only when their mother, Kristine, called them inside for dinner.

These moments were instrumental in fostering James’ love for the game.

James is the middle child, with an older brother, Mike, and a younger sister, Emma.

Mike, now a defenseman at Boston College, shares the ice with James, continuing their hockey journey together.

Similarly, Emma, a talented forward, plays for a girls’ team on Long Island and dreams of joining her brothers at Boston College in the future.

The Hagens’ parents, Kristine and Michael, have always emphasized the importance of hard work, humility, and perseverance.

Moreover, James himself testifies,

“Having three kids, our parents did so much, driving us to all the games and tournaments. It’s a lot. All the extra skates we participated in, it was a big thing for a family. Hockey has always been a huge piece in our lives.”

James often reflects on the chaotic but rewarding days of balancing schoolwork with hockey and acknowledges his parents’ sacrifices to support their dreams.

The family’s dedication to hockey extended to the USHL, where James and Mike faced off several times in competitive matchups.
