In 2001–02, James was a freshman at the University of Florida, where he helped the Gators to a 22–9 record.

After sitting out in 2002–03, James transferred to the University of Cincinnati. The player became a starter for the Bearcats in his three years with them, including his senior year. 

Professional Career

James White, nicknamed “Flight 75” for his athleticism and dunking ability, was the Portland Trail Blazers’ 31st overall draft pick in 2006.

The player spent parts of three NBA seasons with the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and New York Knicks. He also competed professionally in Russia, Turkey, Italy, and Iran.

NBA

James made his NBA debut with the Spurs on March 26 against the Golden State Warriors. During the match, he scored 9 points and grabbed three rebounds in 14 minutes.

He also made his first NBA start on April 16, 2007, in a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

On July 23, 2007, he was waived during the off-season by the Spurs but received an NBA championship ring.

The player played in the NBA’s D-League with the Anaheim Arsenal when he signed a 10-day contract with the Houston Rockets on March 3, 2009.

Another 10-day contract followed before signing a multi-year deal with the Rockets on March 24, 2009. 

James was, however, traded by the Rockets to the Denver Nuggets in September 2009.

On October 1, 2009, he debuted with the Nuggets against the Utah Jazz, but on October 21, 2009, he was waived by the Nuggets.

After that, White signed a two-year contract with the New York Knicks for the veteran’s minimum on July 11, 2012.

In 2012, he was a New York Knicks Summer League team member in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Then, White was assigned to the NBA D-Erie League’s BayHawks on December 18, 2012.

The player was announced as the Knicks’ representative in the slam dunk contest at Houston’s 2013 NBA All-Star Game on February 7, 2013.

Regardless, on June 30, 2013, Knicks waived James.

Overseas

James joined Will Solomon on September 8, 2007, when he signed a four-year contract with the Turkish Basketball League club Fenerbahçe. 

With his raceway dunk on March 22, 2008, James won the Turkish dunk contest against Quinton Hosley, Curtis Withers, and Richard Chaney in the Beko All-Star Slam Dunk Contest.

On November 10, 2009, White signed a contract with Spartak St. Petersburg of the Russian Super League. Similarly, in 2010, James joined the Italian club Dinamo Sassari in Lega Basket Serie A.

The player was the top scorer in the 2010-11 Italian League, averaging 20.2 points in 34 games.

Likewise, James signed a one-year contract with Scavolini Pesaro in August 2011. He returned to Italy on September 19, 2013, and signed a one-year contract with Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia.

On August 7, 2014, White made a one-year contract with Russia’s UNICS Kazan. Then, the player signed with Croatian club Cedevita Zagreb for the 2015–16 season on July 30, 2015.

Nickname: James ‘Flight’ White

When James was a first- or second-year student in high school, a local newspaper gave him the nickname “Flight” for his 45-inch jumping ability. The player’s measurement was so high that his hand could reach about a foot above the backboard’s top.
