The accident happened when a Chevy Colorado pickup truck traveling southbound on Route 170 veered left of center and collided with a Honda Accord driven by Angela Brown, causing the Accord to overturn into a ditch.

A 59-year-old, Walter A. Bolt, was identified as the pickup truck’s driver. He crossed the center line, which resulted in a catastrophic head-on collision.

The tragedy took place around 8 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 170 and Unity Road, which claimed the lives of the mother and her 15-year-old Jason, while another son, Jayden, suffered severe injuries.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), Angela lost her life at the scene of the crash. Her two children were airlifted to the hospital; Jason succumbed to injuries, and Jayden is in critical condition.

Later, authorities discovered three open containers of alcohol in the pickup truck, and local police and medics noted the driver had signs of alcohol impairment. He had slurred speech and the smell of alcohol.

Meanwhile, the driver remains hospitalized, and troopers will present their findings to the prosecutor for potential charges.

On Tuesday, the school released a statement expressing their condolences, writing,

Our Springfield community suffered an unimaginable tragedy with the passing of a student and his mother last evening. We offer our deepest condolences to the family while continuing to pray for the second student’s recovery. In our time of sorrow, we are committed to creating a safe space for students and staff to grieve and process their emotions through the help of additional counselors and support personnel. In the coming days and weeks, we will move forward delicately, sensitively, and respectfully.

Family friend Michelle Shoemaker and her granddaughters, Addison and Kaedence Slepski-Borton, spoke of the impact of their loss.

My heart dropped…because I knew there was a tragic accident. This is a very tragic situation for the family and for the community because they’re so loved. It’s devastating,” Shoemaker said with a heavy heart.

Local businesses have come forward to assist the family. Tiger’s Table owner Nick Ludban is donating 20 percent of sales from food or gift cards over the next five days to support the family.

The VFW is also donating proceeds from fish fries over the coming weeks, with the proceeds going directly to the crash the family.

As soon as I heard about this, my daughters go to school with them, I just think it’s very important that we’re a strong presence in the community. So it was a no-brainer,” VFW Post 2799 Commander spoke volumes about the close-knit nature of the community.
