Tragedy struck early Saturday morning when 19-year-old Javeoin Gills, a former Merrillville High School football player, was fatally shot near Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, Indiana.
Incident Detail: What Really Happened?
The Hammond Police Department reported being dispatched to the 2300 block of New York Avenue at approximately 3:30 a.m. following reports of gunfire.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered Gills’ lifeless body inside a residence, along with another individual who sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased as Gills, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
The second victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover.
Police officials, including Lt. Steve Kellogg of the Hammond Police Department, confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
No suspects have been identified, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Javeoin Gills Was A Bright Kid
Javeoin Gills, remembered for his athletic prowess, was a 2023–24 senior player for Merrillville High School’s football team, wearing jersey number 23.
Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 176 pounds, he left a mark on the field with his skill.
Beyond football, Gills had begun exploring other passions, including boxing and music.
According to friends and family, he had been dedicated to turning his life around and pursuing a brighter future.

Gills’ sister, Jazelle Amira, wrote,
