Tragedy struck early Saturday morning when 19-year-old Javeoin Gills, a former Merrillville High School football player, was fatally shot near Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, Indiana.
Incident Detail: What Really Happened?
The Hammond Police Department reported being dispatched to the 2300 block of New York Avenue at approximately 3:30 a.m. following reports of gunfire.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered Gills’ lifeless body inside a residence, along with another individual who sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased as Gills, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
The second victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover.
Police officials, including Lt. Steve Kellogg of the Hammond Police Department, confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
