The prime reason behind Stan Van Gundy’s wife Kim’s demise was unknown until he revealed it was suicide after months of silence.

Stan Van Gundy, the older brother of NBA coach and broadcaster Jeff Van Gundy, is a decorated figure in basketball who has coached teams like the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, and New Orleans Pelicans.

Behind his successful career, Stan had his wife, Kim, who had his back at all times throughout all the thick and thin. They shared four children: Shannon, Michael, Alison, and Kelly.

Stan and Kimberly Jane Abbott Van Gundy were married for 35 years after tying the knot on May 28, 1988. At the age of 24, Stan met Kim for the first time while serving as the head coach at Castleton State College in Vermont.

However, their marriage of over three decades sadly came to an end with Kim’s passing in August 2023.

Kim’s death on August 16, 2023, was initially reported as “unexpected,” with no cause specified in her obituary. However, nine months after her death, Stan revealed a heartbreaking detail that had previously been concealed.

Stan Van Gundy shared the exclusive detail during an emotional interview on the “South Beach Sessions” podcast with host Dan Le Batard, saying his wife, Kim, tragically died by suicide.

During the “South Beach Sessions” Podcast, Stan Van Gundy Reflected on The Loss, Expressing, “I’ll Never Get Over That.”

Former NBA coach and current TNT analyst Stan Van Gundy went through a difficult time in August 2023 after the unexpected passing of his wife, Kimberly Jane Abbott Van Gundy.

It wasn’t until May 2024 that Stan, in a raw and vulnerable conversation, disclosed that Kim had struggled with a diagnosed mental illness, a battle that ultimately led to her suicide.

In a voice heavy with emotion Stan told Le Batard:

She took her own life, Dan. “I can’t imagine that I’ll ever get over that … it was devastating.

In the podcast, Stan gave a hint about the grief he has been dealing with and highlighted how mental health can be complicated and challenging to understand.

The former basketball coach Stan reflected on her loss, saying ‘I’ll never … get over that.

He further expressed his grief about her loss, saying:

My entire adult life, I trace everything job changes, kids, everything I was with her, and she was by my side. I never, ever envisioned that I was going to live any day in my life without Kim.

Stan acknowledged that he was aware of her going through a tough time but admitted he never anticipated such a tragic outcome.

Even now, it’s been eight months, and I struggle to come to grips with the fact that I’m never going to see her again,” he said.

After Kim’s passing, Stan has turned to therapy and his children for comfort and strength. He reflected on the impact of her in his life, saying:

She taught me a lot. And I want to live her values and a life that she would be proud of.

He keeps a montage of Kim’s pictures above his bed, made by his children, and strives to recall her voice and smile.

He mentioned, “My kids at times over the last eight months … they’ll say, ‘Mom would have really been proud of you for that one.

That above anything else really makes me feel good, because my wife was an incredible person and the loss is huge,” Stan added.
