JK Dobbins was born on December 17, 1998, to his parents, Lawrence Dobbins and Mya Grounds.

J’Kaylin Dobbins is an American football running back who plays for the Baltimore Ravens in the National Football League (NFL).

He competed in college football at Ohio State and was drafted by the Ravens in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Mother Mya Grounds

Dobbins inherited his strong work ethic from his mother.

Mya Grounds, despite being an athlete during her high school years, participating in both volleyball and basketball, wasn’t able to pursue collegiate sports due to the demands of motherhood.

Nevertheless, she continued her education by taking classes at the University of Houston and earning a finance degree.

Currently, she balances her career as an accountant at the IRS with the responsibilities of raising her younger son, Kance, and other kids.

Father Lawrence Dobbins

Dobbins’ father was the star running back at La Grange High School, where J.K. excelled.

He was also a standout sprinter on the track and field team.

Lawrence’s speed led him to Lincoln University, a Division III HBCU in Philadelphia, where he competed in the 4×100-meter relay team that came close to winning a national championship in 1999.

However, he later returned to Texas and enrolled at Blinn College, a community college with a football program.

Although he initially walked on to the football team, he didn’t get to play and eventually quit.

After football didn’t work out for him, Lawrence faced challenging times.

Tragically, when J.K. was just 15 years old, Lawrence passed away from a stroke while in Bartlett State Prison on February 22, 2014, at 33.

Lawrence had been convicted of property theft in 2012 and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Carrying His Father’s Legacy

Despite his troubles, J.K. remained close to his father, who had expressed his desire for his son not to follow in his footsteps.

J.K. and his father had a strong bond until his untimely death.

During this time, J.K. often stayed with his father and grandparents, C.L. and Rita, while his mother, Mya, worked or attended school.

Coping with his father’s death was incredibly challenging, but Dobbins was determined not to let this tragedy derail his dreams.

Football became a source of joy for him and a way to overcome his grief.

He developed into a better player than his father and cherished football nights as his father had during his playing days.

Losing his father at a young age forced Dobbins to mature more quickly than many of his peers, and every time he carries the football, he holds a piece of his father’s legacy with him.
