John Shumate, a former standout basketball player and coach, passed away at the age of 72.

He was best known for his time at Notre Dame, where he played a key role in ending UCLA’s 88-game winning streak in 1974.

Shumate was drafted 4th overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 1974 NBA Draft and had a successful NBA career.

After retiring from playing in the NBA in 1981, he transitioned into coaching.

He served as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, Grand Canyon University, and the Toronto Raptors.

Additionally, he had head coaching stints at SMU and the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.

His last coaching role was as an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns during the 2009-2010 season.
