Jonathan Charles Smith, born on January 18, 1979, was a college football quarterback at Oregon State who later became a coach.

Hailing from Pasadena, California, Smith went to Glendora High School and Oregon State College.

He served as a four-year starting quarterback under head coaches Mike Riley and Dennis Erickson throughout his playing career.

Subsequently, he guided his team to their best season, ending with an 11–1 record, winning their first conference title in 36 years, and earning the Fiesta Bowl MVP.

Subsequently, he worked as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Oregon State University.

Moreover, he spent over a decade as a quarterbacks coach at colleges: Montana, Idaho, Boise State, and Washington.

On November 25, 2023, Smith took on the position of head coach at Michigan State, stepping in after the termination of Mel Tucker.

In 2002, Jonathan Smith and Candice Huddle embarked on the journey of marriage.

Even after two decades, the couple continues to enjoy parenthood with their three children: Robert, Bella, and Charles.

Opting for a low profile, the family has consciously shielded their children from the public eye.

Therefore, this reflects the coach’s commitment to family values in the highly visible world of college football.

Bella Smith, known as Jonathan’s kid, is the couple’s only daughter among three. She occupies the middle position among their three children.

Moreover, being the only girl in the family, she receives a lot of love and attention from both her parents and siblings.

Robert Smith is Jonathan and Candice Smith’s son; he is the oldest child of the Smith couple.

Being the eldest, Robert is two years older than Bella and six years older than his younger brother, Charles.

Furthermore, Charles, the youngest in the Smith family, adds a delightful sense of youthful energy and curiosity to their dynamic.

However, beyond these heartwarming details, only one public sighting of Jonathan’s children has left the Smith siblings shrouded in mystery with limited information available.

From Oregon To Michigan State

Michigan State announced hiring Jonathan Smith as its new football coach, succeeding Mel Tucker, who was dismissed midseason amid sexual harassment allegations.

Smith, leading Oregon State for the past six seasons, is credited with guiding the Beavers to notable success, including a 10-3 record in 2022.

Despite finishing below .500 in six seasons at Oregon State, Smith secured a contract extension through February 2029.

Nevertheless, Oregon State expressed gratitude for Smith’s efforts in rebuilding the program’s culture.

Moving to a new challenge, Michigan State’s athletic director, Alan Haller, praised Smith’s proven success and ability to build and sustain historic success.

As Smith now faces the challenge of revitalizing a Michigan State program that has struggled recently, he aims for consistency in the competitive Big Ten East division.

Additionally, with changes in the Big Ten for the 2024 season, Smith’s debut will include facing familiar opponents from his time in the Pac-12.

This appointment marks a critical juncture as Michigan State seeks a return to success under his leadership.
