Since high school, Simmons has played basketball and had impressive records, which earned him several pre-draft workouts with various NBA Teams. Sadly, even after having such opportunities, Simmons went undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft.

Luckily, in January 2013, Sugar Land Legends selected him in the first round of the inaugural American Basketball League (ABL) draft.

Following the event in September of that year, he tried out for the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League and made it to their training camp roster.

However, during his time in Austin, Jonathon seriously considered giving up his basketball career and working a regular job to support his family. But still, he persevered and managed to fall under the radar of the NBA.

The sudden change of his position to point guard broadens his perspective in the game, which further strengthens his skills.

As expected, Jonathon helped to carry Austin to the Western Conference Finals. In 50 games, he scored an average of 15.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. After this, he was included in the NBA D-League All-Defensive third team.

After this, he was invited to join the San Antonio Spurs Summer League team in Los Vegas. Without much thought, Simmons jumped at the offer and made his debut with the Spurs on July 11, 2015, against the New York Knicks.

Jonathon’s 23 points in the League helped his team win the Championship while also earning him the Championship Game MVP.

After two days, the Spurs signed him in. However, he only made his debut with the team on November 18 against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Throughout his time in the Spurs, Jonathon spent playing for different divisions and teams. Likewise, in July 2016, he rejoined the Spurs for the 2016 NBA Summer League and scored his career-high 20 points over the Golde State Warriors.
