In the New York City Marathon of the same year, he finished 8th again, crossing the line in 2:13:09.

However, he rebounded in Prague in 2002, securing a 3rd place finish at 2:12:01.

As his marathon career drew to a close, Chebet ended on a high note by winning his final marathon in Vienna in 2003, completing it in 2:14:49.

Following his retirement, he mentored numerous aspiring athletes from his Marakwet tribe, leaving a lasting legacy.
