The Utah hockey community is mourning the tragic loss of beloved coach Shaun Salmon, who passed away on May 11, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio.

Alongside Shaun, Kevin Bruder, the president and CEO of the Utah Grizzlies and general manager of the Maverik Center, also lost his life in the accident.

The official cause of the tragedy has not yet been released, but the impact of Shaun’s passing is already deeply felt.

Shaun Salmon, A Native of Ogden, Utah, Was A Key Figure In The Local Hockey Community

As the head coach of the Utah Golden Eagles Hockey in Bountiful since August 2021, Shaun poured his heart into shaping young athletes.

He also coached with the Golden Spike and Eagles youth hockey associations and played as a valued member of the Senior Mustangs team.

His love for the game inspired both players and their families.

The Ogden Jr. Mustangs shared their grief in a heartfelt statement:

“he Ogden Jr Mustangs organization would like to extend our deepest condolences to the families of Kevin Bruder, director of the Maverick Center and President of the Utah Grizzlies, and Shaun Salmon, a beloved coach Golden Spike and Eagles youth hockey associations, as well as a member of the Sr. Mustangs team. Beyond the rink, Shaun was a respected professional.

As the Operating Room Manager at Ogden Regional Medical Center, he was honored in 2023 for 20 years of service.

His dedication to healthcare mirrored his commitment to hockey. He always put others first and strived to make a difference.

Shaun leaves behind his wife of 17 years, Cheryl Salmon, a registered nurse, and their four children: three sons, Nolan and Draven, one unnamed son, and a daughter.

The Salmon family, residents of South Weber, Utah, were Shaun’s pride and joy.

Those who knew him recall his devotion as a father, always cheering on his kids at games or supporting them in their endeavors.

JC93 Elite Hockey Skills shared a touching tribute:

“We were so sad to hear the news this weekend. I didn’t know Kevin as well as I knew Shaun. But had his son Chris participate in a number of our events and they were a good family and he was a very involved and caring father to his son. Shaun had been with us since the beginning. His son Nolan was part of the first couple groups of lessons I ever did. He was on the first tournament team we ever assembled. I was shocked when I heard the news. Two great men who made such an impact on the Utah hockey community taken from their families too soon.”

Shaun Salmon’s death is a heartbreaking loss, but his legacy will live on.

On the ice, he taught kids how to skate, score, and work hard, support each other, and love the game.

At home, he showed his family what it meant to be present and caring. At work, he led with integrity and compassion.

As the community gathers to mourn, they also celebrate a life well-lived. Shaun’s influence will continue to inspire young hockey players, guide his colleagues, and comfort his family.

The Utah hockey rinks may feel a little quieter without his voice, but his spirit will always be there, cheering from the sidelines.

Rest in peace, Shaun Salmon. Your love for hockey, your family, and your community will never be forgotten.
