Early Life, Family & Education

Kevin Porter was born to parents Ayanna Porter and Bryan Kevin Porter Sr in Seattle, Washington, on May 4, 2000.

In addition, he had a tragic childhood, one of which included experiencing grief at a young age owing to his father’s death.

Born into a violent neighborhood, the Porter family went through a lot in their life.

Since then, his mother Ayanna has looked after him and his two sisters, preserving all of his happy and sad memories. 

In memory of his father, Kevin chose Rainier Beach High School over O’Dea High School, where he spent his time participating in sports.

High School Career

Porter joined Rainier Beach High School, located in Seattle, Washington.

Moreover, he scored 27 points, 14 rebounds, and five assists during his senior season as Rainier Beach ended with a 22-7 record.

Similarly, Kevin had 22 points and 11 rebounds during his Class 3A state championship game, defeating Garfield High School on March 3, 2018.

Porter was selected as Washington’s No. 1 player and honored “Mr. Basketball” by the Basketball Coaches Association.

In the 2018 recruiting class, he was labeled the top player from Washington and got offers from UCLA, Oregon, and Washington.

College Career 

Kevin Porter spends his collegiate year at USC. During his academic years, he majored in Communication.

Making his first debut for USC, he made a win against Robert Morris in 83-53 win on November 6, 2018.

Focusing on the strength of his shooting, he was also able to record 15 points off the bench.

Moreover, during his game against Missouri State, Kevin hurt his quadriceps in November and made his return to USC next month during Nevada’s game and left after four minutes due to his injury.

Similarly, concerning his injury, he was sidelined for nine games and made his comeback on January 10, 2019.

He scored five points per minute on average in 25 minutes, but his comeback was short-lived since he was suspended due to some personal behavior difficulties.

Kevin was also a 5-star recruit, making him the first USC player.

Furthermore, Kevin played in USC 33 games and averaged 9.8 points, four rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 22 minutes each.

Kevin Porter revealed his plan to renounce his remaining collegiate eligibility and stepped in the 2019 NBA draft at the end of his freshman season.

Professional Career

Starting his first NBA Journey, he was selected 30th overall by Milwaukee Bucks in the 2019 NBA Draft but transferred to Cleveland Cavaliers through the Detroit Pistons.

On July 3, 2019, he signed with the Cavaliers and made his debut in a loss to the Orlando Magic in October, finishing with one rebound, two assists, and a steal.

Furthermore, on November 19, he made his first NBA start for the Cavaliers against the New York Knicks in a 123–105 loss, with a then-career-high 18 points in 31 minutes.

Moreover, he was sidelined to begin the 2020–21 season because of his involvement in weapon handling charges.

Following an outburst surrounding a locker change following the Cavaliers’ hiring of Taurean Prince from the Brooklyn Nets on January 18, 2021, the Cavaliers mentioned that Porter would either be moved or terminated.

After not popping up for a single game for the Cavaliers in the 2020–21 season, he was dealt with the Rockets three days later.

Houston Rockets Highlights

Porter was dealt with the Houston Rockets for a future top-55 protected second-round selection on January 21, 2021, and was later sent to the Rockets’ G League club.

He made his debut with the Vipers on February 10, 2021.

Moreover, on February 25, he scored 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out 14 assists for the G League’s first triple-double of the season.

In addition, having 50+ points and 10+ assists in his game made him the youngest player to make it in NBA History.

Porter had his first career triple-double on November 29, 2021, and notched 11 points 11 assists in a 102–89 win against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Kevin and one of his teammates, Christian Wood, were suspended after an altercation with Rockets assistant coach John Lucas during a game against the Denver Nuggets.

It was also known that Kevin threw an object in the locker room at the end of the game.
