Sofia Laine, the mother of internet personality and Kobe Bryant’s widow, Vanessa Bryant, took up the mantle to raise Vanessa and her sister by herself.

Sofia Laine, originally Sofia Urbieta, was born in Mexico. She moved to the States in her youth, where she met and married Vanessa’s biological father.

However, their marriage didn’t last long, and they parted ways. Thus far, details surrounding Vanessa’s biological father remain unknown.

Sofia worked hard to provide for her daughters, Vanessa and her sister, Sophie.

She did several jobs to meet the ends, including a shipping clerk at an electronics company. While at the electronics company, she met Stephen Laine, a middle manager who would be her future husband.

Eventually, Sofia Laine remarried Stephen Laine, whose surname, Vanessa, was adopted.

Vanessa often reminisced about her childhood when her mother would overprotect her and her sister.

Sofia and Vanessa have had a complex relationship. The most publicized rift occurred after Kobe Bryant’s tragic death in 2020, leading to legal disputes between the mother and daughter.

Vanessa Bryant’s Mother, Sofia Laine, Sued Her After Kobe Bryant’s Demise!

After the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of her husband, Kobe Bryant, and their daughter, Gianna Bryant, in January 2020, Vanessa Bryant faced another personal battle.

Vanessa’s mother, Sofia, filed a lawsuit against her, claiming she had worked for years as the family’s nanny and personal assistant without pay.

Sofia demanded $5 million in compensation for her contributions to the family, asserting that she deserved to be paid for her services.

She also alleged that Vanessa owed her $96 an hour for 18 years of babysitting services.

Sofia claimed that Kobe had promised to financially support her in exchange for her years of work for the family.

Likewise, she even claimed that Vanessa had forced her out of the Bryant family home and taken away a car that Kobe had given her.

Vanessa Bryant denied these claims, describing the lawsuit as “disgraceful” and accusing her mother of attempting to extort a financial windfall from the family.

The basketball player’s widow stated that she and Kobe had always been the primary caregivers for their children and that Sofia was never their personal assistant or nanny.

Vanessa also explained that she had always supported her mother, providing financial assistance, housing, and other benefits.

She argued that Sofia’s demands were unreasonable, given that Sofia was already receiving alimony from her ex-husband, Stephen Laine.

The legal battle drew significant media attention and public scrutiny, adding to Vanessa’s already immense grief.

In August 2021, the lawsuit was settled out of court, with the settlement terms remaining confidential.

Despite the settlement, the relationship between Vanessa and Sofia remains strained, with Vanessa expressing her disappointment and hurt over her mother’s actions.
