Las Vegas Robertson Student-Athlete Marquez Espinoza, 18, Dies In Car Accident, Leaving Parents In Grief

The Las Vegas, N.M community mourned the loss of beloved 18-year-old graduate Marquez Espinoza and his close friend Orlando “Orly” Romero, who tragically died in a car accident on the night of June 10, 2025.

The crash, which occurred around 11:45 p.m. near the intersection of Seventh Street and Grand Avenue, has left their families, friends, and the entire community facing great loss and grief.

The Las Vegas Police Department is investigating the late-night crash, with speed being considered a contributing factor.

Despite the heroic efforts of emergency medical services personnel, neither of the young men could be saved.

The loss of Marquez and Orlando, both just 18 and fresh off their high school graduation in May 2025, has sent shockwaves through the Robertson High School community and beyond.

Marquez Espinoza was a familiar face on the Robertson High School football field, proudly wearing the #15 jersey for the Cardinals’ boys varsity team from 2021 to 2024.

A dedicated athlete, he played every season except his junior year and was a key member of the special teams unit.

Marquez was part of the 2021 Class 3A championship team. This achievement made him special to his teammates and fans.

His friend Orlando Romero was a standout on both the offensive and defensive lines, earning honorable mention All-State status as a sophomore and junior before securing a first-team selection in his senior year.

Former Robertson football coach Leroy Gonzalez, who coached both Marquez and Orlando, said:

“They are a part of a family, and the Robertson football family is pretty tight, as well, When you lose two of them, it’s a pretty big deal.”

Marquez and Orlando, best friends and outgoing teammates, always lit up any room they entered.

They developed friendships not only at Robertson High School but also at rival West Las Vegas, earning respect and admiration wherever they went.

Their infectious energy and camaraderie left a lasting impression on their peers, coaches, and teachers.

“They were full of life, They were always so happy together and they were always in such a great mood.”
